that first map is kinda awful from a visualization standpoint. there is literally no reason to equalize the area for each state. he could have conveyed information much better if he had sized the states by number of sex offenders and then colorized them by per capita numbers

It's not that the first one is SO bad. It's the second one being like....BAM! Just kidding rape only occurs in the south! What the hell is the first one for? Hell, Oregon looks really rapey but there isn't any red on it in the second graph. What is this shite?

Oregon is really liberal. I think Oregonians are just very liberal when defining a sex offender.
For example, my son was going to college when we moved to Portland. His first trip to Portland was during Thanksgiving a couple of years ago. He brought a friend with him for the holiday, and the two of took the train downtown, just to see what was going on Thanksgiving day.
Downtown was dead, but they were walking down a street when they heard a woman screaming, "Rape!". They ran to help the victim, only to find a homeless woman with a dog yelling at another homeless man with his dog. Apparently, the homeless man's dog "raped" the homeless woman's dog. The police showed up and the homeless woman wanted the homeless man and his dog arrested for "rape".
My son thought the whole incident was hilarious. I thought about that story when I saw that map.

That's a dumb story but seriously I've been told, by a sex offender, that the registration laws in Oregon are less stringent so maybe perverts flock there.

Doesn't mean all sex offenders are really what the label means, like the college guy who had sex with a 14 year old who lied about her age.

I think the second red blob is just showing where the bible belt is. The first graphic is the one showing the per capita statistics. There is literally no correlation. The red is pretty evenly dispursed with the largest concentrarions out of the south. I may be wrong, but I have a feeling this is a really bad attempt at a gotcha.

Yep... Some of the reasons people get stuck on this list are completely bogus. The laws that govern sex offender registration desperately need to be re-written with some common sense involved - especially since each state's sex laws vary so much.
