Haven't been an LSU fan until my freshman year fall '11 so I didn't know how we were preseason, but going into '12 I thought we had a shot.

Sorry for cutoff in the question, it wouldn't let me post the full question.

With all the talent and experience we had coming back after the 06 season I was positive we would be in the mix. I haven't felt that that confident preseason since then.

Until this year B-HARRIS GOT THIS BABY

Started grad school at LSU in 2012, so I don't have a large sample size.

After 2011, I thought we had a legit shot in 2012, and we did. Had we held off Bama for another minute, we win the West and play UGA for the honor of beating Notre Dame.

I also thought the same in 2013, but quickly realized how much mass NFL defections can hold back a team, so I didn't expect much from 2014.

I don't expect to compete for a title this year, but I do next year barring another wave of early exits.

Before the 2003 season I told my friends and bartender that LSU was gonna win it all. They just seemed special to me.

2006 I thought LSU was the best team in the country at the end of the year.

2011, I thought they were the best team after the Oregon game and then after Auburn and LSU, I thought I was witnessing the best college football team of all time. Even though I felt that way, I still felt like Bama was gonna win the rematch just based on the psychological impact.

2015 Honestly I believe this is a special team

If the team can grind out the first three games, they'll be able to really put things together for the "back end" of the season. If things click for Harris, no team in the conference should be able to outclass LSU.

Not that 15 minutes of open fall camp practices is a great indicator, but it looks like this team is confident but relaxed--having a lot of fun playing together.

Going to be a great season.

I'd say any year after 2003 where we had a returning QB that was good or showed real promise the year before. The D has always seemed stout going into the season, except maybe the 2013 team with so many people having gone to the draft. We've had running backs galore. There have been questions about the OL here and there, but it never caused me to think we wouldn't be competing for the title.

As excited as I am about the season, my optimism about QB play and the season is limited until it starts to play out. I would not put it close to post-'04 JaMarcus, '07 Flynn, '09 JJ, or '13 Mett. It's closer to '10 and '11 JJ. Remember, this is all preseason talk - not how the actual season went.

I was drinking the kool-aid early in 2003. The old college football news website used to have an "all welcome back team" article every year talking about key players that missed the previous season for injuries. Mauck was not named in the article. I felt it was a huge omission, and it was the first time I had ever emailed a columnist.

2011.. The 2010 freshmen class was so special and combined with the talent coming back. I knew we were going to special.
