The TABC launched a sting operation dubbed "Operation Bottoms Up," designed to identify retailers who substitute low-end alcohol for top-shelf brands.

The operation began in April 2015. Samples were collected at 68 bars across the state testing revealed 40 samples from 21 of the 68 places contained brand substituted liquor.

I bet this happens a lot throughout the US. You think your are buying Grey Goose, but you're actually getting this:

I always wonder if casinos are typically giving you what you ask for

If you ask for crown and seven, are you just getting Canadian whiskey?

yep. And the wife and I discuss this when she orders. She loves top shelf but some places I just don't trust. And the pours can be shitty.

I have finally convinced her (after 22 years) that if you want to not get screwed when ordering, get a beer.

You could put some McCormick through a Brita and never taste the difference between it and Belvedere. Truth.

I was a helper on a keg truck one summer. A bar in Pascagoula would buy 10kegs of Old Milwaukee every week and pass it off as Bud Light, Miller Light, etc.

Can anybody really tell the difference between premium and generic liquor? I sure can't.

This tactic has been going on all over the world over the past 20 years, it is nothing new.

I imagine an audit is not very difficult, seems that they would just compare sales of premium liquor against wholesale purchases of the generic stuff....correlation = busted.

Sounds like the people that got busted were not very smart with how they were doing it.
