Yeah, is anyone in this thread discussing used oil disposal? How much time and effort for that?
5 minutes drive to autoparts store closest to my house. Drop off the container and leave. No hassle at all.

I haven't read the entire thread, so I don't know if it's been mentioned. I bought my truck at Gerry Lane. Keep the Gerry Lane plate on the front of the truck and get free oil changes for life.

Yes I do. No way am I letting some snot nose kid making minimum wage do any kind of work on my $5000 engine. Most oil pans these days are aluminum and will crack if the steel plug bolt is over tightened. Do you think those guys torque those correctly at 17ft lbs? Hell no. They have no clue what a torque wrench is and you're getting some cheap wholesale oil that sits in a bulk oil storage that is more than likely to have water in the bottom. Lowest quality filter bought in bulk as well and most times not the correct filter just a crossover made to fit as many cars as possible to keep inventory down. No thanks I'll do it myself.

The wife's car gets taken in, my truck is 50/50 depends on what I have going at the time. I always change the oil and do 99% of the maintenance on the vette. It's not a hassle as it's more of a hobby and it's not a daily driver. I usually schedule it when I have something else planned to do at the same time.
It's not really a big deal.

I change the oil in both my cars at either 6 mths or 5000 miles. I use Mobile 1 full synthetic in both. It also gives me a chance to check them out for other issues. We have the same car except one is a 2005 and the other is a 2006.

dont you have to drive there to bring used oil anyway?
There are several places I can take used oil around town and I'll just throw them in the boot of my vehicle and drop it off at my convenience when I drive by a recycler.

It's a bigger hassle to find a place to dispose of the used oil.

Any auto parts store or shop will take it. They get paid for the used oil

Can't believe hasn't been mentioned yet...I know of three people who had their vehicle overfilled and one oil pan cracked. One overfill they never drained any, 6 qts over full! No way to know if they drained all old oil out, or what quality oil or filter they use. On a $30k truck? I'll pass. Btw, I live in the country, used oil goes on the fence row!

I serviced my Wrangler myself simply bc I enjoyed it. I've never done the same on my car.

Any man that can't change his own oil is no man at all
Posted on 8/2/15 at 3:03 pm to bencoleman
Take it in and get it done. 20 bucks. Let the professionals do it
Posted on 8/2/15 at 3:40 pm to PurpleandGold Motown
I save about $40 when I change it on my X3, but it's hardly driven so that about 1 time a year. On my Ram and my Charger I bought a oil change service contract that's good for 6 oil changes and 2 tire rotations for $75 each

I'm about to replace my lower control arm bushings on one side, and I still bring my truck to SpeeDee. Every other oil change,I get them to catch a little so I can inspect it. Also look at magnetic drain plug then.
It costs about the same for regular dino if I do it or they do it. Synthetic is significantly cheaper if I do it

Yeah, plenty of horror stories from the quick lube places.
But, most modern cars only require changes every once in a while, around the same time you need to rotate tires. I bring my car to a real mechanic and get oil/tires done at the same time. He does a quick inspection too. Total bill is well under 100 bucks.
I can change oil better than the minimum wage guys, but I'm not a mechanic. And I'm not going to rotate the tires.

I spent $50 yesterday to change the oil and filters on both of our family cars. I can't imagine that taking it somewhere is much more expensive. That may be the last time I change our oil.

$37 for 6 quarts and a filter at the oil change place by me. Would cost me $30 to do it myself
