PM has been a different coach since the year 2011 when they didn't make regionals, he was probably a little to lax that year and it showed
He has seemed to be a year late in making coaching changes but he does and his hires are good but I wish he would turn Dunn loose
He does play favorites but with 35 players you would think he could manage it a little better, the pressure from fall to spring to during the season through summer ball tends to wear on players.
I think Jared Foster is a perfect example, how do you go from cleanup his jr year to out of the lineup to getting hurt and missing some time and coming back his sr year and starting - I think the pressure and time away really helped him

I did not find anything that CPM said that sounded like he was throwing him under the bus at all. I read it as more of his style of play more than anything. My opinion is that he wanted a guaranteed starting spot and CPM could not do it for him so he wants to go play somewhere he has a guarantee. Just my thoughts.
I read it more of Mainieri is a hard arse and different players respond differently to that style of coaching. Mainieri isn't going to change the way he coaches to appease one player on a roster of 35, so if that player is unhappy, then maybe LSU just isn't the place for him. And I do agree that playing at LSU is a lot of pressure for a young player. Nowhere else in minor league baseball or college baseball is your day to day life under that large a microscope with the combination of the fans and media. Think about it, college baseball is on TV infinitely more than minor league baseball. That can be a lot to handle for a kid who's just not ready for that type of pressure yet. I don't view that as Mainieri throwing him under the bus and thinking he's a pussy.

Exactly. Grayson couldn't hang with the big boys so he'll go play somewhere else and not have a chance at a National Title. His loss really. NEXT!

I understand putting up with a coach that is not well liked by the players if you are constantly winning. I think CPM is a very average coach. Yes he won a CWS with as much talent that you can possibly have at the college level. LSU baseball will always get talented players due to facilities, fans, and tradition. I just think fans give CPM much more of a pass than other sports.

Yet when the pressure in the dugout mounts in a game you basically just see Paul scrunch up his face and tuck his tail between his legs. PM produces some results but if he wants to see bad performance under pressure he simply needs to look in the mirror.

um if you think lsu has the most talent in college baseball, you haven't been paying attention

"average" coaches don't make it to omaha 4 times in 8 years

were you paying attention when paul got to LSU. we were almost completely devoid of talent

Mainieri hasn't tried to quit because of it either, just saying

Did Bregman have fun?
What about the 2 Nola's?
What about the 2 Nola's?

Exactly. No fun is a childish excuse. There are plenty of kids who would kill for that spot and have fun doing it

While I get your point here the situation from these 2 guys to Byrd was a little different. These guys were basically starting superstars (in the college realm) from the time they stepped on campus. Byrd was trying to find his way and Maineri's style didn't agree with him ultimately....so he leaves no harm, no foul.
However, my problem is if Maineri is going to criticize someone for not performing under pressure he better damn well show me something better himself in the dugout under pressure filled situations.

I have no doubt that the pressure and expectations placed on baseball players at LSU is quite high, and the coach is very demanding, and probably should be.
I just wish the coach would learn not to trash the players in public. It's beneath him and serves no purpose.

PM treated them differently. That's no secret. How naive are you?

Maybe had a little to do with their maturity. Shut up and play ball is the key to a good relationship with Coach Mainieri

It's amazingly childish. And, Byrd comes from a good family. It doesn't make sense.
The original report was that he wanted a guaranteed starting spot. I thought that was out of line for a guy who hasn't shown yet that he deserves that. But, at least that made a little bit of sense. You can chalk it up to a business decision.
But, to himself come out and say he just wasn't having fun? Like you said, that's amazingly childish and I'm very surprised by that nobody in his inner circle set him straight and pushed him to overcome the challenge or at least keep him from admitting that he couldn't handle it emotionally. Byrd comes across very negatively due to his own comments.

Paul Byrd weighs in now, see the Advocate.
Basically he didn't like playing for PM
Paul still respects the program and LSU and does not question PM's success at all, respects his son's decision and that their will be adversity at any level and wherever he goes.
Still can't believe he's walking away with the number of spots open but hopefully he finds what he is looking for

You always seem to have deep secret inside information.
How exactly?
