We are watching the Coast Guard helicopter search the Miss River right now.
We went on the Natchez tonight and saw people swimming by the boat landing at the Jax Brewery around 6pm. Apparently one of the swimmers went too far out and disappeared. Local LEO was called around 7:30 and the missing man was reported. A search has been underway since 7:30 by LEO and CG.
A CG helicopter is still scanning the river looking for the man now. We are sitting on our balcony watching him scan a path in the middle of the river from the Crescent City Connection down to the St Bernard ExxonMobil refinery and back. Over and over again.

That is not smart. That river has a ton of crazy currents, Michael Phelps would have trouble swimming in it.

Damn.... That really sucks to hear. But that is so incredibly dangerous, I'm shocked to hear someone do it there. Those currents are very deceiving from the moon walk.

Why would anyone ever voluntarily swim in that thing?

Seriously. Who thinks this is a good idea?

Someone who has never heard of cancer?

I work on old man River. Only the dumbest or the bravest would chance him.

Yeah like undertow and also very unclean water I'd imagine.

NOPD on the river wall at the foot of the Jax Brewery now

There's an upstream eddy that starts right around the foot of Canal Street on the East Bank. There's no telling where the body pops up. My bet will be downstream. Nasty bidness recovering drowning victims from the River, bad on Day One, reprehensible by Day Six.
I agree that Swimming in the Father of All Waters is not recommended.

Ambulance just came to take him away
Found him 300yds downriver up against the river wall directly across from Jackson square

I'd think the boat traffic would be the big hazard there. That and the fact the current will pull you downriver with a quickness, so people may tire themselves out trying to fight it. It doesn't actually pull you underwater tho.

They've been searching for 4-1/2 hours and found him 1/4 mile downstream. I'm pretty sure he's dead.

Did not appear he survived
Was a big guy, looks like foot patrol found him up against the bulkhead directly behind the platform area between Jax and Cafe Dumonde where the dude with bagpipes always plays
They pulled him out and NOPD was standing around. No hurry. Ambulance came and put him on a gurney and wheeled him to the ambulance. No hurry and they were not working on him so I assume he didn't survive
So sad.

I can't imagine anyone thinking that it was a good idea to swim there.
