why are there 43 pages about a dead cat
THIS!!
we got 43 pages over Cecil, and not one mention of the illegal activity at Planned Parenthood. And I dont care what your stance on abortion is- the story should be up for discussion.
But the lion gets all the attention.

I know, right? Why can't this guy just drive his four wheeler up to his box stand, turn on the portable heater, read his phone for a bit, wait for the deer to walk up to the feeder, and then shoot it like a real man does.

if we can't hunt them, their value is 0. that makes poaching extremely economically viable.
It only puts it to 0 for those interested in killing the animal. Parks and other areas make tons of money on tourism, so the animals will always have some value.

the "park population" is basically like a zoo population. there is a diminishing return that is met very quickly
i bet you can't sustain the species' population in nature by "park populations". if they could, why aren't all the areas facing major issues with elephants and rhinos just making parks for those animals to stop the poaching? that obviously isn't enough

That was an extremely rare situtaion and you know it. The tag was for a SPECIFIC rhino. There is no evidence that lion tags are relegated to specific lions or even to sepcifically aged lions.
All we know is that a guide gets access to a tag, takes out a hunter, shoots a lion, and then lets him go on his merry way.

the rhino example is the perfect example.
In just a few decades, a large population of northern white males has been reduced to a single 3,500-pound bull living in a 10-acre enclosure with round-the-clock guards. There are also four females left: two in Kenya, and one each in the United States and the Czech Republic. But none of them are fertile, meaning the population is on the verge of extinction.

Approximately 600 lions are killed every year on trophy hunts... These hunts are unsustainable and put more pressure on the species.
How are they unsustainable if the lion pop is 30,000+?

including lions in populations that are already declining from other threats
In specific circumstances specific lions are selected to be killed that don't negatively affect the overall population.
Trophy hunting is also counter-evolutionary, as it's based on selectively taking the large, robust, and healthy males from a population for a hunter's trophy room.
Not true. Most of the lions sanctioned to be killed are non breeding males.

600 lions are killed every year on trophy hunts
Lets see, 600 x $30K = $18M pumped into the economies of otherwise dirt poor countries to incentivize them to save the animals, as opposed to the areas where hunting is not allowed, and all poachers have to do is bribe the 'game wardens' with a few bucks to look the other way, because there's no financial incentive for these guys to give a frick.

I bet legal hunting is what led to their demise.

let me add that there is a litany of US regs on the import of these trophies from abroad, and if the animal is on various endangered lists they have to investigate and approve the process. i don't think they just allow any animal, even if the permit was valid in Africa
there are also international regulations that i am not familiar with but they regulate the selection/permit process, too
here is a page on US Wildlife/Fisheries guides to animals and importation. you have to get permission from other agencies
all of these hunts are scrutinized from multiple angles and all of the regs are based on scientific research and ecological knowledge
i find it highly doubtful that this permit process wasn't examined/approved by multiple governmental regulatory bodies prior to the hunt. now unlike the rhino, lions aren't nearly as endangered and they don't require nearly the same amount of "hands on" population regulation. that's the only reason why there was a tag for a specific rhino and this tag was a general one for a single lion (not collared, but nobody is arguing that wasn't a frickup of epic proportions at best and poaching a collared animal at worst)

that's a white rhino and they are basically extinct and that was from poaching and habitat loss, not hunting.
the other rhino was a black rhino and it is highly regulated (including permitted hunting) so it doesn't suffer the same fate as the white rhino

PETA wants dentist killed.
quote:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called for the execution of the American dentist who killed Cecil the lion in a statement Tuesday condemning the shooting. “Hunting is a coward’s pastime,” said PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in the statement. “If, as has been reported, this dentist and his guides lured Cecil out of the park with food so as to shoot him on private property, because shooting him in the park would have been illegal, he needs to be extradited, charged, and, preferably, hange
