2022 Winter Olympics: Almaty or Beijing?

Who would get your vote? The host will be selected Friday 7/31.
I say Almaty because the city has real snow, mountains and everything else you would need for the winter olympics.
If Beijing gets it, it will be the third straight Olympics on the other side of the planet (PyeongChang in 2018 and Tokyo in 2020). Time zone wise, it blows for us in the USA. Plus, Beijing isn't the ideal place for winter sports.
The advantage for Beijing is they already have stadiums built since they hosted the summer games 7 years ago.

I really want Almaty because why not? Should be a hoot.
At least it appears no one has to fly SCAT airlines to get there. That should be an Olympic event in itself.
Neat Story about Kazahstan's capital Astana
I thought this was interesting. They shifted the capital from Almaty in 1997 to Astana when the latter was basically a field. Pretty neat.

I would rather it be out of China at this time. We were there too recently with the summer games.
Off topic, I know, but when is the next realistic chance for the games to be here in the states? Chicago would make a great summer site.

Boston looks like it's pulling out of the 2024 campaign. I doubt another US city makes a bid since we seemed to put everything into Boston. There's some serious competition as well: Rome, Paris and Hamburg. Our best bet is to not even waste money trying to win that bid.
I honestly think we'd have a good shot at the Winter games in 2026.

How Denver has not hosted a Winter Olympics boggles me
But there is such an anti olympic sentiment among most people now, the dont want the money wasted for their city to host it.
Not to mention it makes the city almost unliveable for the 2 weeks its in town.

Well I'd say we'd have a good shot for 2022 if we had made a bid.
The Olympics are awesome and I want the US to host them but probably a majority of people don't want anything to do with the Olympics. NYC's 2012 bid and Chicago's 2016 bid were shot down with the quickness during the vote and people were happy.

The US has probably the best infrastructure for sports yet we could go over two decades without an Olympics. Simply amazing.
Hosting an Olympics has become too counterproductive. Nobody wants a bunch of white elephants.

The difference is with the U.S. we already have the facilities. ATL barely built anything. And what they did was reused or repurposed. Hell, they turned a profit.

Atlanta was fine. Not unliveable at all.

New Orleans should get in the mix for a summer games.

I would like to go to Astana and watch a hockey game. They have a KHL team, Barys Astana.

And hopefully Almaty gets the Olympics.

Hamburg? Would they give the Olympics to a German city ever again considering that last two were 1936 Berlin and 1972 Munich?
ETA: My winter vote would to Almaty, Kazakhstan. That'd truly be interesting.

Denver originally won the bid for the 1976 Games but voters killed it in a referendum.

The IOC's demands for a host city have come under a lot of fire recently. That's the reason for American cities turning their back on bidding. The article I read yesterday said that Los Angeles looks the be the front-runner in getting the US bid now that Boston has backed out. Originally, it was Boston, San Francisco, LA & Washington DC.
Here's an interesting tid-bit:

Americans across the country overwhelmingly (89 percent) support the idea of holding the Games in the United States, according to a national Associated Press poll in June. But that support dropped to 61 percent when people were asked if they would want the Olympics in their local area. It dipped even further, to 52 percent, when they were asked if public funds should be used on top of private funds to help pay for them.

Almaty does not have the infrastructure. Even if you gave them this long to build it, they wouldn't come close to finishing it in time.
Also, IIRC, the visa situation for Kazakhstan is prohibitively expensive.

You realize that Almaty is 'on the other side of the planet' as well, right? The city of Almaty is less than 200 miles from the border with China.
Even still, I vote for Almaty... because frick China.

Baton Rouge for the winter olympics!!!
We could have the bobsled course on the Conja at Blue Bayou.
Gypsum piles in St. Gabriel would be great for ski slopes.
Make it happen, Kip!
