re: Is this the year the offense and defense are both great at the same time?

Yeah because 2011 sure couldn't move the ball. Good WR play = good QB play. Alabama had a horrible QB last year but had one real WR threat on the outside that opened up the entire offense.

ALabama had a quarterback last year that completed 64.5% of his passes, threw for 3487 yards, 28 touchdowns, and averaged 249.1 passing yards a game.... if that is horrible I will take it every year.
(also 350 yards 7 TD rushing 4.2 YPC)

Offense takes a step forward, but "great" is a stretch.
Defense takes a step back due to new system and DL depth, but gets by on talent.
So, we break even. 4 losses.

I'd put the 2007 defense ahead of the offense... they were efficient, but there was nothing outstanding about them.
If I'm not mistaken the '07 offense holds both the scoring and total offense records for a season.

My man, you've just got it backwards. You're mistaking correlation for causation.
Is there a correlation between good QB play and WR effectiveness? Of course, the two are linked.
But does good WR play CAUSE good QB play? No.
In fact, I'd argue the opposite - that it's far more probable that good QB play causes good WR play.

I think we will be about the same. last year we had two new starters at DT. This year, 2 new starters at de. If coach o can't get anything from some of these talented guys that haven't played much, then chavis and brick did a real number on the front 7.

I just want to point out 2012-2013. First year for Landry really getting involved at wr and obj dropping balls left and rt in 2012. 2013 best wr tandum in the country. I would say that's more on Landry and obj getting better.
They were making the tough catches. The ones not thrown perfectly. We didn't have a wr doing that with Lee and JJ. A wr can make a qb look better. Just like a qb can make a wr better.
Just by the sheer numbers I'd put money on there being more wrs making qbs look better than the other way around.

I honestly believe both units will be very good here.

Tduecen, The 2014 defense was mauled by three teams and surrendered a last minute lead to another. They were not good. I don't care what the statistics were, a defense that costs you four games is not a good defense.

Oddly probably the worst running game that I can remember though.
09's was worse.

Great WRs make great QBs. The same way great OLs make great QBs. Why did Mett go from balling out with OBJ and Landry to being pretty bad? A good QB can only do so much because it's only one piece of the puzzle.
If you guys think that Sims was a good QB last year, I have some bad news for you. DeAndrew White and Amari Cooper were just that good.
Was Lee or JJ good? No. They never had proper coaching and relied on a wealth of WR talent here at LSU. There's very few cases of a QB ever making a WR look good because it goes against the fundamentals of football. How is a QB supposed to somehow create separation from CBs so that WRs can get open?
The fact is that if we get good WR and OL play, we'll have a good QB.

Honestly I felt the OL played horrible against UGA and Bama in 2011 which is what made Jefferson the right choice for those games.
Jefferson was scrambling for his life most of the time. I think Jefferson was average and the same with Lee. I just felt Jefferson played better when the OL looked like crap.
So I agree the OL is very important in making the QB succeed.

Elite offensive linemen who excel in run and pass blocking are the rarest players in football. It's why the sport is going more towards HUNH, spread, and zone read based offenses. A team with an elite offensive line will do better on offense than a team with any other elite position groups. We can go on and on about Tyron Johnson, Derrius Guice, Arden Key, etc from the 2015 class coming in but the reason the recruiting class was successful was the OL haul.
Luckily, we should have some elite OL to protect the QB and open it up for our RBs.
