San Snead in the 1939 US Open at Philadelphia CC was pretty bad.

Needed Par to win Bogey for a playoff on the Par 5th 18th he made a triple bogey. Thought he needed birdie to win par to tie.

BBC coverage of VanDeVelde's 18th hole

Highlights: The drive, second, and third shots may have been the worst consecutive shots in history. The drive was way right fwiw.

His wife looks like she is laughing at him.

The crowd sounds like they are laughing after his second shot.

While Van was in the water, it looks like the marshall's are pushing the crowd back and things got a little testy.

Finally, at the end during the handshakes, it appears Parry informed Van De Velde there was a playoff. Van De Velde literally looks around confused after that discussion.

Oh, and I didn't realize Leonard could have won the OPen if not for his bogey on the 18th.

My cousin was standing right next to Mickelson's bag on the 18th tee in that U.S. Open.

He always jokes about how he could have won the open for Mickelson by just grabbing his driver out of his bag and breaking it over his knee or running off with it.

I have long felt that Mickelson's biggest mistake wasn't hitting the driver. That's a club he's hit thousands of times. My opinion is that Mickelson's biggest mistake was his second shot. Instead of taking his medicine, punching out, and trying to make par from 125-135 yards out in the fairway, he tried the miraculous super high cut through the trees.

Just punch out and at absolute worst he bogeys and is in a playoff.

Kenny Perry at the Master's was pretty heartbreaking. Dustin Johnson has a tendency to blow up too. And Sergio for his whole career.

I read an interview with Mickelson in which he admitted that the most shocking thing about that tournament was that he was actually in the lead on the 18th tee. He thought he had played like shite the whole week, particularly off the tee. I guess it caught up with him on that hole.

I don't think VanDeVelde should even be in consideration for biggest choke. Unluckiest break in a major? Absolutely but not biggest choke. No way.

His second shot was exactly what he was trying to accomplish and just got a terrible bounce off of the grandstands backwards 75 yards . For him to make that last putt to get into the playoff was clutch!!!

Waaaat???

Only needed a double bogey on the 72nd hole to win the Open. There is no way you can blame a triple bogey on one bad bounce off the grand stands.

Sure you can. He hit the perfect shot - exactly what he wanted to do ... You don't make that putt to get into the playoff if you are choking

Eta: the drive was his worst shot/swing on the hole.

quote:

Arnie was beating Billy Casper I believe at the US Open back in the 60's. Get on the back nine and Arnie has like a 6 shot lead with 8 to go. Billy tells Arnie all I want to do is come in second. In which Arnie replied, I'll do everything I can to make sure you do. Squandered the big lead and went to an 18 hole playoff the next day, Casper won.

Reading more about this one makes me change #1 to Arnie. Up 7 shots with 9 to play and up 5 with 4 to play.

Up 2 shots in the playoff with 9 to play and lost by 4 strokes.

He would never win another major.

For one hole, I still say Van De Velde over Mickelson.

But golf had some major choke jobs, no doubt. I forgot about Seve, Hoch, and Chin. I think Hoch had about 2 foot putt to win and missed.

I came into this thread thinking Norman at the Masters in 1996 had to be the biggest choke, but after reading the description of Palmer's US Open collapse, I think it has to be him.

Mickelson, Van de Velde, and Seve (or maybe DJ or possibly Rory at the Masters) round out the top 5.

I know there's a few US opens with Snead or Masters from the 30's and 50's (Ken Venturi maybe) that I'm missing
