22 Jump Street

Bad Boys 2

Lockout

Dino Velvet 8mm

Constantine

Fargo

Isn't he basically the same guy over, and over, and over again?

I'd probably go with D'Onofrio.

Pretty sure he's an actual eastern euro gangster in real life

Like ever?

Because, Robert Duvall, Alan Rickman and Gary Motherfrickin' Oldman have to be in this discussion and all would likely be ahead of him (although it can be argued that Duvall had enough lead work to disqualify him from "charactor actor" status, he cut his teeth on character roles - and outside of The Great Santini, Lonesome Dove, maybe Tender Mercies and a couple of others - most of his great work has been in support).

(And I like The Blonde from Fargo).

My initial gut check is Oldman, as well, but the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking it is Duvall, with Oldman a close second.

Character-for-character, at the top it's close, but Duvall has so many iconic support characters...

Oldman aside, I'll throw some love for these guys:

William Fichtner:

David Morse:

And weirdly enough, John C. Reilly is pretty awesome:

And shout out to James Rebhorn (RIP):

Although, to be fair...most of the charactors he played were smug jerks or assholes. But damn if he didn't play them perfectly.

He was great in HBO's From the Earth to the Moon - and was up against Kevin Pollack in most of his scenes, who is no slouch and could be a candidate in this category, himself.

JK Simmons. He almost steals every movie he's in - even if it is only 2 or 3 scenes.

is awesome indeed. I can't wait for ten years from now when Jake Gyllenhaal is at the top of the list.

I'm a big fan of Damian Lewis...have been ever since Band of Brothers. His work on Homeland has been awesome, and I was a fan of the short-lived Life. He is supposed to be playing William T. Sherman in an upcoming mini-series.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, David Morse is a great character actor, as well.

Olivier, and a lot of the actors listed would likely agree.

James Cromwell has to be up there (defintiely ahead of Stormare):

William Hurt's transition to character actor has gone quite well:

Chris Cooper is great also:
