Pensacola beach - Best public access areas?

We're in Pensacola for a couple of days... where is the best place to access the beach? We're staying at someone's house that's not ON the beach, so we'll have to use the public access areas.
TIA
ETA: We're near the Big Lagoon area

I wouldn't go to the area near the pier. Tons of trash on the beach there.
Best bet might be to go down past Portofino resort and just explore the beach and/or bay down there.

Fort pickens is the most beautiful. And no crowds. Just keep driving til you see the loop A parking area.
Or chicken bone beach.

Go east, turn south on one of the Avenidas. Public access boardwalks are all along Ariola Dr. More residential, less trash.

Go to Johnson's Beach or any of the public beach access points on Perdido Key.

There is a public beach access you can walk to on the west side of Emerald Isle. It's between Emerald Isle and Beach Club.

How's the water?
Last weekend, the west wind blew a lot of brown water into the beach areas of Pensacola all the way east to at least Ft. Walton.
I love how the water is usually so crystal clear and we were disappointed.

I went surf fishing Tuesday on Chicken Bone beach, the access point at the gates of the Ft. Pickens area, it was not that busy. There are a ton of pavilions on the beach side, plus another huge area across the street on the bayside. And a snow-ball truck parked nearby.

Johnson's Beach is definitely your best bet from Big Lagoon.
without a doubt...
if you drive through P'cola and Gulf Breeze then you obviously like spending more time in your vehicle than you do at the beach

Go to the public beaches on Perdido Key.
Pensacola Beach proper is quite trashy and often ghetto

Avenida 18. Take right off via de Luna. Park I. The parking lot at the church or school to the right and walk across the public access. Our favorite secluded spot on the beach. Usually not that many folks.
