How many Dongs did the cubs smoke last night. seems like quite few

Schwarber can get to Montero's level, which is apparently not that amazing.
That'd be really odd since Montero is highly rated in pitch framing, and that was the reason the cubs went and got him.

Depends on how you define "right". Fair value for a #1 is an elite prospect + (although teams are rarely willing to do that anymore). Fair value for a real ace (Kershaw, Hernandez, Sale, Kluber) is 2 top 10s and 2 more top 50s and more.
Do the Cubs have any top 10 prospects left to trade?
Well we're only talking about Cole hammels here because the people you're listing are untouchable.

Anthony Rizzo has been absolutely smashing baseballs during that 0 for 20 stretch...he was hitting liner after liner right at people...the AB's in the Cincinnati game were unreal. And he came up empty.

Then Tsuyoshi Wada starts his presser by declaring himself a "bad arse." Maddon told him to say it. Must have said it like 5 times

He's a #1, but I wouldn't put Hammels in the elite category; and you don't get a contract discount.
Phils probably want 2 top 20s or so. Bit pricey.
Just have to wait the Phils out.

The Cubs are not getting Cole Hamels because they're not going to give up any prospect to do it. They are going to get a back of the rotation pitcher, which they may already have in house, or another bat, which they may have in house as well.
I don't see the Cubs doing much trading or making any big splashes in the trade market at all. Any big pitching acquisition will happen during the winter, unless one of the top tier starters is having a shitty year and his team sells low. Doubtful to me, though...that's just my opinion and I've been wronger than a wrong machine built wrongly before, so who knows.

No but I'd place him as an available tor guy.
Not that it matters because we will be going for a cheapish rental.

I was just thinking about the fact that we traded away Chris Archer for Matt Garza.

Yeah, but we got Addison Russell for Jeff Samardzija and Hendricks for Dempster and Olt, Edwards and Justin Grimm for Garza

My opinion has shifted towards this. Why would we give up some big name prospects now for Hamels when we could just wait til next season to go after a David Price or Zach Grienke (both are better than Hamels)?

Why not though?
Seems like the Phils may have to settle if they are going to deal Hamels. Would giving up say Baez and Alcantara or Vogelbach and a throw in set us back? I dont think
Hamels is an ace. I think his contract and the fact that PHI is anxious to deal him causes people to have a skewed view of his skill set and history

quote:I get what you're saying, but you also have to ask yourself that question. If you had Cole Hamels and the Cubs offered you that, would you take it? At this time, I think that lot gives the Phillies some players for a few years but it hardly gives them the sure thing they have in Cole Hamels.

Also, consider what you know already...Baez is currently hurt and while he had some really good success at Iowa fixing his approach his MLB stock is not very high. The injury plunges it down farther.
Alcantara's basically the same, but with less upside and more versatility...and he's healthy.
Vogelbach is a DH. I don't want to discount him at 1B, but there is a roadblock there in Philadelphia as well unless they can somehow eat Ryan Howard's salary and deal him.
A throw in...what does that even do?
I don't think that sets the Cubs back at all, but I also think that the Phillies don't gain much from it either. Baez is the center of that deal and I just don't think he's exciting enough to get it done.
Also think what that does to the Cubs...that means they pretty much have to hold on to Jonathan Herrera as the utility infielder for this year (do they want to do that with Alcantara making progress) and Starlin Castro (whom they might actually deal considering his age, contract and accomplishments).
I'm not shooting it down and being negative...I just don't really see the Cubs doing something like this when they can just add a top arm in free agency for dollars only in the winter.

I think someone would beat that price for hammels. I don't know the ins and outs as to how much of his contract they will cover. They have said more to get better players. To me I see more benefit waiting and buying a guy for no player cost next year. The options seem to be pay hammels a lot and give phillies players. Or just pay someone else a lot and keep your players.

And we all know how much you hate Herrera.
Seriously though, I'm on board the don't buy Hamels train and wait for the Ace Pitcher Rich FA market next year.
2016 What if:
Lester
Price
Arrieta
Hammel
Hendricks/Wada/Turner

Debatable. They are pretty equal, if anything.

They have been shopping him for a year now. If no one is giving up a "sure thing", which doesnt really exist anyway, they are going to start having to consider all offers.

Cub fans view of Baez is not equal to GMs of the league, if I had to guess. Cub fans saw him blast close to 40 HR in MiLB and expected him to come up and perform like that despite being rushed. He has holes just like any other guy. Cub fans saw top 5 prospect and naturally were let down.
Im not sold on his value being that low based on 50 games at the MLB level. He's still 22 y/o, plays a premium position, and has 30 HR potential. He very well could be the best prospect PHI gets in return for Hamels
quote:
Alcantara's basically the same, but with less upside and more versatility...and he's healthy.
Again, we are talking a 23 y/o with half of a season of big league ball under his belt. Only a hand full of guys come up and kill it. And he still blasted 10 HR in 70 games as a rookie. He still has shine.

Howard's either going to be dealt or bought out after 2016. He irrelevant to 1B of the future for that team.

Phillies don't gain much from it either
I dont think they expect to start competing in 2016 with the haul they get from Hamels. Like I said, Howard will be gone after 2016. They free up around $50m per year getting rid of those two guys. They have Maikel Franco already up killing it at 3B, JP Crawford is a top 10 prospect who will man SS for them in the future, Baez could slot at 2B and Vogelbach at 1B or AA in the OF/UTIL (Hell trade all 3 of them IDGAF).
Im also fine with waiting til free agency, but if you want to fight for a playoff spot now you may want to go out and get you a Hamels. That's the beauty of having organizational depth.

would you rather trade Baez(or any prospect) for Aroldis Chapman(in hopes of re-signing him), or Cole hamels?
