A/C Quote - Ripped off?
Posted on 6/16/15 at 8:50 am

I have a 3 ton, R-22 system. I need to replace an evaporator coil and was quoted over $3,000. I am 99% sure that I'm getting ripped off.
Thoughts?
If so, can I get some suggestions in Baton Rouge for an honest A/C person and what I should look at to paying?

You prob should get a second quote before getting all bent out of shape about a dude's repair quote.

Sometimes contractors give obscenely high rates if they don't want the job.

Call Carl Rogers, Southeast Heating and Air.
The most honest AC guy in the city.
....and yes, that price is ridiculous.
Your welcome.

that's pretty high, id your inside unit really hard to get to?
I know when a job is a pain in the arse and I don't want it , I quote really high.

No, the unit is inside the home, very easy to get into. The quote is from One Hour, so pretty sure it was standard pricing for the job because he read it out of a book.

I once asked a contractor how he decided to charge.
He said he looks at the kind of car in the driveway.

You can get a whole new inside unit for that price... The coil is expensive but that seems excessive. Maybe because its an older unit? But, you could look here LINK /
Replace the whole freaking thing and find a handyman to install for 600 bucks. It isn't like they have to run duct work so it would probably save you some cash in efficiency too..

Toyota Yaris and Kia Forte. No ballers here.

If I was going to pay 3 grand for repairs on a central unit I would just buy a new one.

Wouldn't that void the warranty?

I just had an evaporator, compressor, and condenser changed and it cost me 5200 in Alabama. 3 ton.

On installation yes. On the parts no. Plus the machine is new so if you do regular maintenance and keep the coil clean it should last. I did it in my old house about 6 years ago, saved me a fortune and Carl did my maintenance. Worked for me...

There are other ways of politely declining work than charging an outrageous price. Especially in today's age where the power of wireless data and social networking and social media can eviscerate your hard-earned reputation in half of a heartbeat with a single misstep along those lines.
