Um new owner could have easily assumed all responsibility for said debt when he purchased the business.

The price of oil. I was very close last year and it fell through. Probably a blessing in disguise since the bottom fell out about two months after we would have started

No.

I imagine being able to find people honest and competent and trustworthy enough to trust with your money, goods, and reputation/brand would be near the top of any list.

The biggest challenge is making my self do the fricking work somedays.

That's the hardest thing. I was caught up in a thread the other day and I had my office manager call the customer and tell them I was backlogged and would be two hours late. Because I wanted to finish a thread.
(it was a repeat customer who always pays a week late, so I didn't care. I'm cheaper than anyone else who fixes commercial equipment)

Go ahead and down vote me too. Like the other guy said, it is very possible that your customer's debt passed to the new owner.

Depends on your k.

This! It took me about 3 months to realize he had to go! I've run my own business since 1999. I've been in my current business since 2004. Been blessed but worked my rear off to get where I am today. Will never work for someone else again!

Yes it can be a strain but I have good employees and I'm not tied to the business at all, get plenty time away to hang with the family, vacation and dabble in real estate investments.

My business is just over a year old and hoping to make a big jump in revenue this year so my challenge would be not be getting in over my head. To do this work will require more trucks and more employees and that isn't cheap. Pretty nervous.

I married a man who could never live his life being chained to a normal career or working for a boss. So he works harder just to live a life where he can be his own boss.

Most challenging part - umm sitting next to a not-quite-dead and very unhappy 10 ft gator in a 12 foot boat while my husband brushes aside my concerns. Also challenging- sitting next to the bait bucket, lol! Ewww!!

My husband is self employed and his "business" depends on the season or the day. In the summer it might be alligator hunting (fully legal and doing it for decades), bringing some Canadians on a swamp tour (or even filming an alligator hunt for a TV hunting show long before "Swamp People"). Or it might be crawfishing. The next day it might be making hay or rounding up cattle. Summer is always a surprise with what pays off.

A hurricane brings on the launching of the reluctant roofers - man, it is a hard job, hot as hell. But we have family and friends who need roofs and they know we will do them an amazing job, for a very fair price and stand by our work. We have to turn work down. I have no fear of heights (as my BIL happily discovered) and had done roofs with my daddy so I became a unexpected roofer after Gustav. I was a shingle slinging girl!

While doing the work, the owners of houses question the fact that a petite 5 ft female (me), who holds a college degree and has worked as a certified teacher, is doing a roof and ask my BIL if he pays me as much as I would make as a teacher. BIL replies " Is she gonna teach them shingles to read?" LOL!!

I love BIL and his sense of humor and the fact that he pays me well and appreciates my hard work kept me going back to those damn hot roofing jobs or whatever he comes up with. I respect the fact that he works a full time job and takes vacation time to do these a roof job for someone who desperately needs it.

Fall brings us pecan season with all of its fun and that really is a family affair with 3-4 generations of family involved in various ways. I swear my BIL stalks me during pecan season trying to lure me because he knows I am a good worker (and secretly pays me more). He also brings chocolate and other treats to the worksite and he has never had an unhappy worker. Everyone loves him.

Some jobs pay good and some pay less. I have seen my husband and BIL put in a good day or two working for an elderly or needy person that they know and charging only for supplies (bought at wholesale costs) and lunch. The homeowners happily cook for them and send them home with other goodies like extra eggs, produce, etc.

Those who can pay full price have no problem with the prices because they know the brothers know what they are doing and they are getting a good deal. Those who cannot pay full price get the "kinfolk special" and we often use supplies we already had on hand for no charge.

Carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, hunting, rescue and recovery, farming, cattle, medical emergency, whatever it is, my husband can handle it and will get called to do it. Only thing he can't do is fix a computer. People may wonder why a college educated girl like me ended up marrying a man with no interest in college or schooling, I am secure in the knowledge that whatever life throws at us, he can fix it. I never have to call repair men.

So we are not rich but we have love and adventure and have always made it thru life. We never expected to be rich and wouldn't live that life anyway.

TL;DR " It's GingerKittie, duh!!"

But he didn't. They new owner was not responsible for the debt incurred by the previous owner. I did business with the previous owner - not the current owner. It's not the current owner's responsibility to be held accountable for shady dealings of a previous owner. How absurd. You make it sound like the brick & mortar is responsible for the debt and whoever is inside owes it. Ridiculous. It's like being charged with vehicular homicide and pleading innocent because you sold the car.
