I think the NE area along 59 (Atascocita, Summerwood, Kingwood...) probably has the best "daily" commute into downtown Houston.
This, and it's not even close.
Kingwood is also a great choice for several additional reasons:
· Routinely rated as the safest suburb in the Houston Metro area, based on actual crime data.
· Very good school district – top 5 in Houston. Within the school district (Humble ISD), Kingwood High is the top performer
· Very affordable homes. A good starter home can be had between $100K- $140K. A very nice house that’s walking distance to Lake Houston can be had between $300K-$370K. For slightly more than $350K you can get a new home in a country club, also walking distance to water.
· As in every suburb, the commute will vary depending on what time you leave. During peak rush hour, a Park N Ride bus is the best option. You park your car in Kingwood and ride a bus that takes the HOV lane and doesn’t stop till it gets downtown where it will have several planned stops. The commute using this option can range between 40-45 minutes, which includes wait time on the bus before it leaves. Another bus leaves every 5-7 minutes during peak hours and every hour during non-peak hours.
· This is one of the only suburbs having natural boundaries like Lake Houston to the east, and the San Jacinto river to the south. These natural boundaries are what will prevent neighborhood creep from lower income neighborhoods – preserving property values over time.
· NE Houston is starting to boom, with new large scale developments underway along that portion of the Beltway 8, new developments along 59 up towards the new wing of the Grand Parkway connecting the Kingwood area to The Woodlands, and the proposed Grand Texas Theme Park under development just north of Kingwood.
· It’s only a 4 hr drive to get to Baton Rouge. It’ll take you 45 minutes longer from The Woodlands or an hour longer from Katy and about an hour and a half longer from Sugar Land.

there's a growing suburb called cut-n-shoot (actual name) you could look into ...

Orange!

Why would you want to be in the burbs being young unless you have children?
Because we plan on expanding our family sooner rather than later, and we'd rather not worry about buying and selling a house so soon.

Do you know where you will be working? What is your budget?

If you move to the burbs you'll be driving so much y'all won't have time to expand your family.

Oakhurst is New Caney ISD, you want to avoid that.
It's not that bad. Would prefer Kingwood or K-Park or Atascocita for high schools but still not as bad as some other schools. Porter HS gets a bad rap because of well, Porter, but I know the principal and the AD. Good people.
My wife actually just started working for this district after having been with Humble for almost 20. It's up and coming.

I know people who live in the loop that have commutes just as long as people in the burbs. Houston's surface streets aren't that great either.

I'm sure they are good people, but that is not a good school district when they there are so many good ones close by.

I lived 5 minutes from work near galleria and loved it, moved out to Katy and had to commute to downtown....within 2 years I had moved back home

Not gonna argue since you are correct. Kingwood trumps everything around and it's not close.
However, I would move to Oakhurst in a heartbeat when I get the kids out of the house. Less taxes than Harris County and there are some nice homes on the course over there.

59/I-69 has the best traffic situation for downtown of any of the suburbs
I disagree if you live in the Kings Point section in the back.

you want to compare getting out of the "back" of kingwood to getting out of the back of the woodlands or katy?

Yea i lived in it for a few years.
I must say, the wife and I quickly found out that completely stripped new construction neighborhoods aren't for us. I like living in kingwood 10x better than oakhurst because of the trees and houses that don't look too similar.
Also KWCC is another reason to move there if you are a golfer. Hell of a deal for anyone under 40.

Check out the Champions area near 1960 and 249, has a northshore feel to it. I find Katy and places without tons of trees bleak and depressing, not to mention the awful commute.
