Surface Pro 3 or iPad?

Wife just started her maternity leave and will be at home for about four months so I want to get her one of these to keep herself entertained. Can someone with some experience give some feedback on which they like better and some of the reasons why? I know there are some tech savvy folks here, so I'm figuring this is a good place for feedback.

Do you use Apple products?
- App sharing, Photo sharing, Home sharing, Familiarity, etc.
Is a physical keyboard necessary?
SP3 has this.
Any specific apps or software or websites that she'll need to use?
- App support for each, full functionality of SP3 for some software, etc.

We do use Apple products. We both have iPhones and an older model iPad. We don't really integrate any of those products together with app or photo sharing like you mention though.
Physical keyboard isnt necessarily a requirement. I think it would be a cool feature.
Not really any specific things she will be using either. It's really strictly just for entertainment purposes and she will love having a new device to play with.
I'm looking and some of the surface pros are $1,500 and even $1,900...are they a superior product, superior technology?
Thanks for your thoughts so far. Any other advice you can dish out will be greatly appreciated.

As stated...
iPad for goodness of linking with other products. Cheaper way to consume media.
Surface for replacing a laptop and running windows programs (office).

If she's staying at home looking for entertainment then a true desktop is by far the best option. Seriously.
I love my Surface 3 for getting work done on client site ... in fact it is fantastic for that purpose. But right now I'm at home typing on my favorite keyboard hooked up to a regular desktop.
If I want mobility, sure, and iPad or Surface will be fine but I'm at home in my pajamas and don't need it.

You make a really good point with that. She will certainly be at home these four months, but I think she would like the mobility as time went on so that she can travel with it or take it on the bus when she goes back to work or whatever.
Are the specs on the surface pro 3 as strong as an actual desktop? Processing speed and what not. Again, not tech savvy so thanks for the patience with stupid questions.

Stupid question. What exactly do you mean by this? What options does the iPad present?

if you get a surface pro 3 you can run google play apps and games in full screen on it's 12" screen or in windowed mode.
I love my SP3

They're as strong as a laptop. Runs full Windows 8.1. Consider it to be a small laptop that can be used as a powerful tablet. You do have to buy the keyboard separately. In terms of processing power and capabilities, it is unquestionably better than an iPad. But, if it's just for entertainment, the Surface Pro 3 is probably more than she needs, even the $799 one.
If she ends up using it for basic or advanced productivity, it can replace her laptop, desktop, and tablet.

So if I go with the SP3, you would recommend getting the i5 processor as opposed to the i7 I'm assuming? I have no clue about the level of difference in those two. It looks like there is an i3, but maybe only comes in 64 gb.
I have to assume that a SP3 can hook up wirelessly to a printer? Can an iPad as well?

My wife has the SP3 i5 8GB 256GB. Great machine. They have been on sale but now the sale is off. Costco has a discounted package. Probably more sales to come as Windows 10 is only a month and a half out.

Depends on what you need. SP3 is more of a laptop replacement. iPad is more of a compliment to your other gear. SP3 has a keyboard so she'll probably find that to be useful although its not great for having o your lap and if you're going to have it on a desk you can have a stand and bluetooth keyboard for the iPad.
If she doesn't have a laptop already, and one of you is relatively proficient with keeping a Windows computer clean, I'd probably go with the SP3. If she doesn't need many special applications or to save a bunch of random files, or if you're VERY worried about viruses then maybe the iPad would be better.

Yes. Even the i3 would be fine, but it sucks that the storage option is only 64GB.

Yes to SP3. For iPad, if you have AirPrint-capable printer at home, it's effortless. Otherwise, there are apps that supposedly allow you to print to non-airprint printers, but I have no experience with them.

I fairly recently got an SP3.
Once the initial interest wears off, you're not going to use it in lieu of a laptop. But, if you commit to the great productivity tools (pen, pen in conjunction with OneNote, etc.) it can be very powerful.
Jury is still out for me as to whether I'll get as much out of it as I hoped. I do like it though, and certainly get more out of it than a typical tablet.

I know it works fine as a laptop, but I'm assuming the person has another laptop of roughly equal capability.
I mean, I have a 2011 MBP upgraded with a SSD (so it functions very well), and when I sit down at night to work I'm usually not breaking out the SP3 unless there is a specific Windows task I need to perform (or an SP3 task, like annotating documents).
It's a very useful hybrid, and far better than an iPad and keyboard, but you really think most would choose it over a primary laptop for productivity?

The biggest productivity hindrance for me would be the small screen size. SP4 is supposed to have a 14" version, which I consider the minimum size for a laptop.

Likely true for a lot of people. Also, while the typecover works well and so does the stand, for sitting on a couch doing some work it just won't ever be used over my MBP (assuming they're both right there).
