Is there something wrong with arbitrarily wanting to move to another town?

My wife and I got married a few months ago and have both lived in BR for basically our entire lives. We'd like to move somewhere else for 1-3 yrs before we have kids just to experience another city. Is this a terrible reason to want to move? We'd both like to end up in South Louisiana afterward though because both of our families are here.

I can request a transfer to another town within the company I work for now, but one concern I have is that it will seem like a weird move to management and might be a black mark on my record in the future.

doubtful. Usually broad range of experience is valued by mgmt.

I'd recommend it to everyone quite honestly. There's so much outside of BR.

You might not want to come back once you've been out. Only way to know for sure how you feel about BR is to leave.

I don't think it's a terrible reason. However, I would think really hard about it....things could happen within your company that make it difficult to move back.

I say pick a great place and do it. Best of luck to you and yours.

No its not odd, and management wouldn't mark that against you if they are competent.

That makes it not arbitrary.

outside of LSU, what exactly is in BR?

BR seems like a complete shithole to me.

Wife and I moved to Nashville after college, fully intending to go back to New Orleans one day, and we have never left.

Probably move to New Orleans in 10 years or so if my career makes it possible, but will always own a place in Nashville.

Even if iowa was a "shithole," (which it isn't) that has no bearing on BR's problems.

You live in BR; moving is never a terrible decision

No, I'm in a similar situation, although we aren't dead set on coming back. There's more out there than what Baton Rouge (or Louisiana) offers, I don't understand how people fail realize this.

I grew up in New Orleans. I moved away from there and I'll never return.

I did not appreciate the good food that was everywhere in South Louisiana when I was there. It took leaving to see that.

If I ever return to Louisiana or the southern US, it would be to Baton Rouge....but that's unlikely. At this stage in life, the job market and the pubic schools in Baton Rouge would have to change significantly for me to seriously consider returning. I'll never live in New Orleans again. That's off the table.
