Well LSU finished third behind Kansas and Baylor for Darrell Arthur much like duke finished third for baron davis. I'd say you have to finish second in recruiting battles to claim them as almosts

How did LSU finish 3rd behind Baylor for Arthur? I hardly heard anything about them in the recruiting process.

I was just a kid, and I have no idea how their recruiting process went but Kevin Garnett is from Greenville, SC and went straight to the NBA in 1995. Jermaine O'Neal is from Columbia SC and went straight to the NBA in 1996.

Again, I have no idea if they ever considered it.. but I've often heard "what if we could have gotten both."

Hell even without them we were 66-28 record (34-14 SEC) during the 1996-1998 stretch, which included the school's first SEC championship in 1997. The 1997 Gamecocks posted a 15-1 record in SEC play. Imagine if we could have grabbed those two.

Garnett moved to Chicago to graduate from high school after an ugly racial incident with legal implications in SC. I don't think he was in any particular hurry to return for college.

He literally went to sleep one night thinking he was going to Baylor and then had a dream about Kansas and committed to us the next day. He has said it would have been Baylor.

The Jaguars took punter Bryan Anger ahead of Russell Wilson in the 3rd round of the '12 draft.

In the 93 MLB draft Alex Rodgriguez asked the Mariners to not draft him, he wanted to go to the Dodgers who had the #2 pick. We ended up drafting Darren Dreifort, who never amounted to much despite having great stuff.

In 09 USC had verbal commits from Jarvis Jones, Vontaze Burflict, and rumored to have a silent commit from Manti Teo. Only Jarvis ended up signing and he injured his neck and never played for SC again. What a LB core that could've been.

I'm not going to do any research and just go off the top of my head.

The Timberwolves took Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn back-to-back at No. 5 and No. 6. Sitting at No. 7 was Steph Curry.

In 2010, the Timberwolves took Wesley Johnson and passed on Boogie, PG-13, and Gordon Hayward. Admittedly, the latter two were nowhere considered Top-5 picks.

The Vikings took Michael Bennett in 2001 and passed on Reggie Wayne. To be fair, they needed a RB to replace Robert Smith, but that would have been fun to pair Randy Moss with Wayne. Carter retired shortly after Wayne was drafted.

Really, there was an entire draft of "players" that could have been on the Vikings had they not drafted Troy Williamson in the Top-10.

Just this past recruiting class alone, Wisconsin basketball wasn't able to reel in Diamond Stone or Henry Ellenson. Ellenson isn't so much surprising as Wojo gave his brother a scholarship and that was a wrap. Stone, on the other hand, was a backbreaker after graduating Kaminsky. However, I am a big fan of Wisconsin's 2015 class and they have a chance to be a good one.

In 2014, Wisconsin was close to landing Kevon Looney. In 2012, Wisconsin lost out to UNC for JP Tokoto.

Years before that, Ohio State beat out Wisconsin for Evan Turner.

I won't say he "almost ended up" at Wisconsin, but Bo Ryan and his staff has been noted for being the first major program to really notice and extend an offer to Anthony Davis.

I could probably think of more instances, especially when it comes to Wisconsin football, but my brain is officially mush.

In late 1983, the Pirates traded for Jack Clark. Bowie Kuhn vetoed the trade. Clark ended up going to the Cardinals.
