4th one, whatever
3rd one with a generational talent (Lebron, Kyrie, AD)
Plus the League owed the pelicans for the whole Chris Paul debacle

Jeter was almost a Cincinnati Reds player.

Adrian Peterson was close to being an Arkansas Razorback, or so the story goes.
Al Jefferson was going to be a basketball Hog until he opted for the draft out of high school.
I wanted Cliff Lee (Arkansan) to be a Yankee but it was not to be.

For the Mariners...
Troy Tulowitzi - They called him a few minutes before the draft and told him that they planned on taking him. They changed their mind at the last second and took Jeff Clement instead.
Mike Trout - The Mariners had the #2 overall pick that year and almost took Trout with it, but decided on the "safe" pick and went Ackley instead. The previous year under a different GM, they drafted a reliever name Josh Fields with the 20th pick overall. He held out until the last day to sign and most assumed that under the new regime they wouldn't sign him and just take the 21st pick of the 2009 draft. They decided to sign him, he sucks, and Trout ended up going 25th overall in that 2009 draft.

I think the Braves and Yankees were thought to be very possible landing spots for Griffey back in like 2002. Would have loved to have him for a while.

As an Orlando Magic fan I remember the summer we almost pulled off Tracy McGrady, Grant Hill, and Tim Duncan.

Larry Brown said he had Paul Pierce higher on the 76ers draft board but took Larry Hughes because he had made him a draft promise

The Falcons had Farve but he needed to be traded since he couldn't stop living it up in Buckhead.
The Braves had a deal for Barry Bonds when he was with the Pirates but the deal fell through. I can't remember which Brave it was but they said they were happy it fell through because they would have had the two biggest assholes in the game (Bonds and Justice)
UGA signed Louis Williams and then lost him to the Sixers in the draft.

Astros passed on Derek Jeter with the first overall pick and the head scouting director quit shortly after because he wanted to draft him, but management didn't want to pay Jeter the bonus he would demand and possible signability issues.
Imagine if Derek Jeter spent his career in Houston instead of New York.

The Saints choosing Alex Molden over Eddie George when we needed a RB was pretty cringeworthy.
Drafting Turley over Randy Moss. To be fair, many teams passed on Moss and Turley was pretty good, but Moss was a franchise changing pick. Also, I think earlier that year, the Saints had worked out Randall Cunningham but passed on him. Sure enough, Cunningham and Moss then proceed to tear it up in Minnesota.

Not a fan of them, but basketball powerhouse Virginia tech declining to give steph curry, the son of their schools second all time leading scorer, a scholarship is one of the all time greatest frick ups

Rockets in their neverending quest to acquire a legit PG: Almost traded for Tim Hardaway prior to trading for Barkley. A couple years later the Rockets almost acquired Damon Stoudemire. Eventually they got Francis, which worked out for a couple of years, at least.
Horry was traded for Sean Elliot during the '94 season but Elliot failed his physical.

And once upon a time this was discussed:
Roberts was the "key" to the deal.
quote:
The Knicks may be trying to join the threesome of Orlando, the Rockets and Clippers in what could amount to an incredible exchange of talent.
The deal would send Olajuwon to the Clippers and Sleepy Floyd to the Clippers or Knicks. Houston would receive Danny Manning and Loy Vaught from the Clippers, Roberts from Orlando and Gerald Wilkins from the Knicks, if he can be signed before the trade. Wilkins is an unrestricted free agent.
The Clippers would receive Olajuwon along with Jackson and Charles Oakley from the Knicks while giving up Manning and Vaught to Houston and Smith and Rivers to New York.
New York would receive Smith, Rivers and perhaps Floyd for Oakley, Jackson and Wilkins.
Orlando would receive two first-round draft picks, probably from the Clippers, for Roberts.
Roberts was the "key" to the deal.

And Chris Bosh was about to sign on the dotted line with the Rockets last summer until he got an eleventh-hour phone call from Pat Riley threatening to out him as gay if he didn't stay in Miami.
