Tell me about living in Nashville

For the sake of discussion, let's assume Mr. and Mrs. Sheep are 30 something professionals with real jobs and a child. One of the Sheeps may have a job opportunity in Nashville. The other could (probably) continue working with their job remotely - or has a skillset/resume that would allow for job placement pretty easily.
What is living in Nashville like?
Traffic? Schools? Housing? Family things to do? Cost of living?
Coming from the Greater New Orleans area - what would we hate? What would we love?
For your trouble, here's a picture of Mrs. Sheep with her new tattoo:

If you like all the gayness of faux Texas cowboys combined with the douchiness of the pop music industry, you'll love it.

And Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand
I always kinda sorta wished I looked like Elvis
And in my head there's all these classic cars
And outlaw cowboy bands
I always kinda sorta wished I was someone else

Nashville lost its aura and mid-sized city appeal years ago. It's way too commercialized now.

Meh, I may be ignorant but in my opinion, Nashville is an awesome place to go to college, or be a young professional, but not live when you're in your 30s with a kid.
However, I will say that Franklin, just south of Nashville, seems like it would be an awesome place to raise a family.

Its fantastic.
Bad because we're growing so fast. Live in the city and you can avoid most of it.
Fantastic. Even the public ones.
Expensive but plentiful.
Unlimited. The city has great restaurants, incredible music, there are mountains and lakes nearby, etc.
Was average, but is going up due to major influx of new people.
No crime you would love. No great and affordable seafood you would hate.

I am curious how many actual qualified answers you will get from here among the people that have just visited as opposed to the number of people that have actually lived there and know what in the frick they're talking about....with regards to the actual question you asked.
Admittedly, we have visited and found it to be a wonderful city with plenty to do, however my perspective simply comes from being a tourist and not a resident

its awesome and amazing.

Traffic?
live southwest (west meade, bellevue, fairview) and its fine. 19 minutes to downtown from affordable scenic bellevue
quote:
Housing?
hot right now but you can buy a nice house for around $250k if you shop around.
quote:
Family things to do?
billions. we have everything here.
quote:
Cost of living?
cheap cheap cheap. williamson county (best schools in the state!) property tax is like $3000/year for a $400,000 house. not too shabby.

nothing. you will love it here.
beautiful part of the world and we have waterfalls, caves and the corvette museum right up the road.

Great city. Lived here for many years now. The growth is ongoing and that will present some major issues in certain areas. As stated previously, Williamson Cty is where a lot of young family types gravitate. It is getting pricey. Not sure what your prospective home budget is right now, but check out Nolensville. It's a great location and has been booming lately. Still some great opportunities though. It's in Williamson Cty and will have 3 new schools next year. Plenty of back roads to the Cool Springs / Franklin / Brentwood area where a lot of the jobs are. Drive into Nashville could be a bit of a bitch depending on time of day though. Wife & a kid here and that's where we are building. Plenty of stuff to do in this area. E-mail me if you have any specific questions. Lived here since '98 and before that was in nearby Clarksville. It's great. I'm 27 and engaged for reference. Live downtown.
Traffic definitely sucks
Williamson co has the best schools in the state and top 10 in the country iirc
Housing has gotten expensive. Gentrification is occurring so I suggest doing your due diligence on the next area/s within Nashville to buy as low as possible in hopes of making a good investment. Donelson comes to mind as well as Woodbine.
Lots of family things to do. It's a city
COL has risen but still decent for what you get IMO. But Nashville is experiencing major growth so COL will obviously continue to rise.
You'd hate the traffic I guess? You'd love the security. It's much safer. Music scene is great, and it's not just country like folks think. New amphitheater is being built and is already booked with a ton of great shows. Preds frickin crush, so that's cool these days.

Traffic?
For the most part it blows.

Schools?
Not a clue. We're DINKs.

Housing?
More expensive than it should be, but not bad.

Family things to do?
If you're in to the outdoors, there's so much more to do outside here than in S. LA.

Cost of living?
Average. I moved from Nola to Nashville and kept the same level of income and have seen no decline or increase in my back account on account cost of living.

You'll hate the lack of the "don't give a frick" attitude of New Orleans. You'll also love the lack of the "don't give a frick" attitude.
I live in Melrose and love it. I grew up in Crieve Hall and went to school in Franklin. Williamson County is a little too boring for me, but others love it. I like being a 7 minute drive from work and within walking distance of food and bars.

It floods there. Stay here in New Orleans where it's safe

I actually love Nashville, and I live in Austin. Some great sections. If you have kids, I would opt for Franklin or Brentwood. I am single, and if I had to move out of Austin, I would opt for East Nashville, or Denver. Music Row lately has certainly become douchebag on Broadway, but in terms of the live music scene, Austin and Nashville gets my nod. They have really developed a great alt country, string band, and indie scene in East Nashville.
You have seasons in Nashville. Their summers are pretty nice compared to Nola and especially Memphis. Spring and Falls are great.

Are the people saying it isn't a good place to raise a family saying that because it's not the suburbs, or is there a better reason?

Nashville is the shite. Don't move here if you suck.

Nashville is the best city in the South, besides Nola I guess.
Posted on 6/1/15 at 12:58 pm to Sheep
Nashville is a great southern city, but my favorite city in the South is Atlanta.

Nashville is amazing. I lived there for 3 years and would recommend it to anyone.
