That sounds pretty horrific. The saving grace on my flight was that most people remained cool (albeit very quiet). When everyone starts freaking out, all bet's are off.

Saw a flight attendant hit the roof of the cabin on the way to Brazil once. Multiple people screaming and praying under their breath for the duration.

I've had a few so so turbulent flights.
But, the scariest one to me was a flight I took on a prop plane from Syracuse to Potsdam.
The winds were VERY strong and I just remember looking out my window on the left side of the plane and realizing that I was looking IN OUR DIRECTION OF TRAVEL!!!
The bitch was basically flying sideways.
Yeah. Not pleasant.

Flying from O'Hare to Dayton when I was a little kid. Flight ahead of us crashed in Des Moines and our flight had to divert or something and we missed our connector. Got on a plane in O'Hare 8 hours later. They flew us through a brutal storm. Made it down safe, but the turbulence was nasty. My mom hated flying, and would yell out every time we jolted. I was embarrassed once we got off...some girl looked at me and my mom, pointed, and said "there's the lady that screamed".
EDIT: Flying from San Francisco to O'Hare, and then O'Hare to Dayton. Poor storytelling on my part.
My wife and I recently flew from Maui around The Big Island in a very small aircraft, and she had to sleep on my shoulder for most of it because she got airsick. We didn't even get to see Kilauea because of storms. I'm not bitter or anything.

Birmingham England is a shitty place to land. That's where some of the flights are in the link above if I am not mistaken.

Flying into Las Vegas once, the turbulence got intense. One time we dropped and hit "solid air" again so hard, I thought we hit the ground. Luggage bins popped open and stuff was flying everywhere. A group in the back of the plane had been drinking heavily and laughed through the whole ordeal. Lesson learned.
I flew into Aberdeen Scotland in early January once. The North Sea winds made that the most intense approach I've ever experienced.

Man reading all this is not making me feel good about flying for the first time next week....

Hit clear-air turbulence between Orlando and Memphis that damn near made me shite a brick, but that was all of a 5-7 sec free fall, and although I thought we were gonna die, it was not as bad as the other flights described on here.

few weeks ago
Orlando to Pensacola on Silver hungover as all hell. It was the closest I've come to puking on a plane. I fumbled for the puke bag a couple times but held it in

Was flying home from Las Vegas and when we hit max altitude the right engine of the plane starting shooting Sparks and then the plan made a huge jerk and we seemed to be going down for about 30 seconds with the plan being very jerky back and fourth while going down. I was sitting right on that wing and saw the whole thing as we lost the engine. There was a black women screaming in the back" some mother frickers better tell me what's going on". There was radio silence from the pilot for what seemed about 10 mins as after we stabilized altitude the plan was just jerking back fourth and unable to keep the plane straight. After that long period of time the pilot came back over the radio and sounded like he had been scared shite less as well said he was turning the plane around. We landed at the Las Vegas airport with about 30 ambulances and emergency vehicles waiting with lights and sirens going. It was the first time in my life I knew I cheated death and was prob suppose to die if not for whatever the frick that pilot did. He told us we flew back in on a barely working left engine and no right engine.

yea remind me to never fly to or from Las Vegas again

I go to Vegas a few times a year and it's almost always a rough flight at some point I feel like. The last time in March the pilot said he was going to go around the rough air which cost us 15-20 min maybe but it was smoother and we got to see the Grand Canyon up close which was awesome.

Nothing as bad as some of the stuff described in this thread, but I got tossed around pretty good late last night landing at MSY. I was on a little American Eagle jet coming from ORD.
Always. Been on a few flights in between Love and MSY where the flight attendants weren't allowed to get up the duration of the flight. Have an early one tomorrow morning back to DAL that I'm sure will be bumpy.

American eagle out of shreveport to dallas.hit a fricking air pocket. Flight attendant hit the roof and her cart landed on her after that. The guys seat in front of my dad broke and he ended up in my dads lap.

Worst turbulence 2 yrs ago flying AA from Japan to US. Somewhere ENE of Japan over Pacific we suddenly hit some really choppy air that racked and rocked the plane for what seemed like forever. Attendant fell to the floor. My wife helped her back up. EVERYBODY inside was quiet and scared. The worst of it went no more than 5-10 minutes, but bumps and jolts kept going for about 20-30 min after. No fun.
