what yall are failing to realize is that you don't have to pay tuition at Harvard unless your family makes bank

Really not a big deal if he's just planning on coming back to Alabama and being a doctor. Will probably end up saving him 100s of thousands of dollars.
If he had wanted to be the personal doctor of Obama or some shite like that.. That's a different story.
Graduating from med school in Alabama = graduating from med school in Harvard IF you are just going to be working for a hospital or something like that.
Smart financial move

He's essentially going to the Harvard of the south. Seems legit if he wants to stay closer to home

I know those are the big 3 but do people here feel the same way about the other ivy league schools? Do you "have to go" to the others?

We're talking about where he's going for undergrad, not medical school. If he does well in college he can still go to the top med schools in the country, where his money would be better spent vs undergrad imo.

if he plans to live in the south, especially in Alabama then bama connections> Harvard connections.
Ivy League connections only matter if you plan to use them. in the SEC a degree from the state university opens a ton of doors in that state.
Now if he wanted to move all over and was in a different field than medicine Harvard>>>>>>>>Bama by a long shot.
Its all situation dependent.

But you can't send any kid from the south up to Harvard and expect them to succeed. I'm not even talking about school either. You think these "old money" kids want to hang out with some middle class kid from the memphis suburbs? Probably not.
Why the frick not? Harvard is a very diverse college that prides itself on it. You have to be an absolute weirdo to not make connections while at Harvard.

Definitely right decision.
He wants to go to med school.
Over 100k for undergrad for no reason. Only to accumulate much more? Smart kid, a bs is only a step for the many in medicine.
I agree.
If he wanted to go to business school or law school, or something like that, I would say go to the IVY league and make your connections.
But, what connections do you need for medicine that you won't get in medical school? Doctors make their connections in medical school and in their residency.
And, looking at this kid's scores and background, I'm guessing he'll have his choice between Harvard, Hopkins and Duke for medical school. Worse case scenario for him is UT or UA Medical Schools.
There, it's almost certain he will have to incur some debt. So, might as well go on the free ride to a decent undergrad and incur the debt when you need to.

He can still go to the Ivy Leagues for his residency. I know plenty of docs from LSU and Tulane that ended up at Harvard for their specialties.

Think ill apply to Harvard and Yale for shits and giggles.
Lets see if a white southern male who is an army veteran and currently unemployed can get in.
I doubt it lol

Ummm, bullshite. If he plans on living in Alabama itself, then maybe (if they're dumb blind homers), but I promise you the average recruiter in Houston and Atlanta is going to put a hell of a lot more stock in the guy with a Harvard degree than one from Alabama.

There are plenty of Harvard trained physicians in the south but many of them did not go to Harvard for undergrad.

Such as brown or Columbia. Yeah I'd think so, no brainer
Then the other schools such as Baylor, Notre dame, Johns Hopkins, etc you gotta go. It's a no brainer

My point is there are no guarantees in life
Kind of like there's no guarantee this kid goes on to med school, leaving him with just an undergrad from Bama when he could have had much more from an Ivy school?

HERE are the kid's qualfications --

It's easy to see why Nelson got into UA's honors program and every single Ivy League school. As a student at Houston High School in Memphis, Tennessee, he has a 4.58 weighted GPA, has taken 15 AP courses, and achieved a 2260 out of 2400 on his SAT and a 34 out of 36 on his ACT. He's the senior-class president of his high school, a National Merit Scholar and National Achievement Scholar, and a state-recognized alto saxophone player.
First, I don't know how a 2260 translates into the 1600 point scale I'm used to. Can you assume that the 2260 would be a 1460 and he got 800 on the writing portion?
Second, even with a 1460, I doubt he would have gotten into all 8, along with Stanford, if he were a white applicant. But, he almost certainly would have gotten his fair share of IVY league acceptances with a 1460 and all his accomplishments.
I would like to know where he graduated in his class. It's kind of weird that they didn't mention that. It could be the case that a 4.58 at his school barely puts him in the top 10%. Doubtful, but possible. But, it does seem that if he were valedictorian or salutatorian the article would have mentioned that.
Also, it is somewhat surprising that one of the IVY leagues didn't try to "buy" him. Prime black applicants are often the subject of bidding wars in the IVY league.

Most (maybe all?) of the Ivy's don't have any merit scholarships. It's 100% need based. If you're lower class, you're not going to be paying anything, but if your middle/upper middle class you might not get much even if you're a genius minority who every other school is competing for.

I also have a bs from lsu and a masters from ulm.
I wonder if any of the Ivy League schools have Ph.d's in exercise physiology

A lot of people don't understand how careers in medicine work in this thread. This guy is making a good financial decision. A physician will not get paid more or get a better job based on his undergrad degree.
If I were him, I'd go to public state medical school as well. If he busts arse and does well in medical school, he will have his choice of residency programs - including ivy if he desires - to choose from. At that point the residency program pays you (all programs pay about the same) to go there and you're not paying tuition. No one cares where you went to undergrad or medical school once you're a doctor, they care about where you went to residency.
I went to LSU undergrad and sat next to people that went to Harvard, John's Hopkins, Yale, Brown, etc in medical school. Hell, there were people from Lamar (Beaumont) in there if that shows you how little you're undergrad matters. Also, the medical school I went to cost a little over 11k a year for tuition. A year at the medical school I did my residency at cost over 45k a year. People that went to medical school there and paid >4x tuition for medical school than I did have the same specialty training and degree hanging on their wall as I do.

Don't kid yourself. There are "special" scholarships (regardless of need) available to black candidates and there are often bidding wars for these kids.

Kid should've went to John Hopkins.
Maybe BAMA promised him med school acceptance so long as he took all the pre-reqs. I had a friend who came from Ben Franklin and went to LSU under those conditions. She's now a gyno.
