There are a handful of films I regard as essential viewing in order to understand the conflict from a cinematic perspective.
The Best Years of Our Lives
Sands of Iwo Jima
12 O'Clock High
Stalag 17
Bridge on the River Kwai
Sink the Bismarck
The Great Escape
The Longest Day
The Dirty Dozen
Battle of Britain
Patton
Tora! Tora! Tora!
A Bridge Too Far
The Big Red One
Das Boot
Empire of the Sun
Schindler's List
Stalingrad
Saving Private Ryan
The Thin Red Line
The Pianist
Downfall

One of my 10 favorite movies of all time and my dad's favorite movie.

Das Boot needs to be on that list.

I would definitely add Midway.

First drop that drivel, Thin Red Line was not accurate to Guadalcanal at all.
Add:
Letters from Iwo Jima
Flags of Our Fathers
Best Years of Our Lives
Das Boot
Fury

Agreed. But I appreciate what Malick was trying to do. He was trying to show the horrors of war from an existential perspective. I find that approach unique and this is why I have included it on my list.

Letters From Iwo Jima

I can understand liking it for the reasons you state as an ode to film making, it is just on my shite list

The Great Escape & To End All Wars need to be added
I'd remove Flags of Our Fathers. Really isn't that good of a film.

I like how it humanized men who we had come to think of as superhuman. It put a face to the faceless men in that photograph.

Yeah, I think Flags of Our Fathers is one of the greatest WWII movies probably because it is so unconcerned with mythmaking. In fact, it punctures the myth and shows them as people.
Oh, and Das Boot is the greatest war film ever made.

Gotta have Midway. A Must.
Band of Brothers, obviously, needs to be on there....so, you can add The Pacific series as well.
Might want to add that U-Boat movie with Matt McC and Harvey Keitel.

You also need to add The Dirty Dozen.
