My reel crapped out on me yesterday.. First time ever using it. Tried to strip some line off the real and it was extremely rough and grinding. (the drag)
Any suggestions anyone? Maybe greasing it up some? Emailed Allen and no response yet

Call them. I've only got like 15-20 fish on mine but no problems so far.
Everybody says their customer service is the best in the business so I'm sure they'll take care of it.
Eta: I know this sounds stupid and I'm not trying to be a smartass, but the drag wasn't too tight was it?

I've tried calling them but they haven't answered yet. Only tried once today tho.
And no the drag isn't the problem. I took the spool off and it's grinding from the gears somehow. I switched the retrieve to Right hand and it does the same thing. Smooth when reeling but it grinds hard when I use the drag

Just got in touch with AJ (customer relations). really cool guy, said that one in every couple of their Alpha 3's had some type of problem but there was no way for them to test it. Blah blah blah long story short he said he would send me a prepaid shipping label and they'd send me either my reel fixed or a new reel within a week.

Good to hear.
I was thinking... Should one of us start up a fly fishing thread with some links for beginner fly fisherman, fly tiers, ect? Kinda like that rugby thread on the msb? Or is there enough fly talk here that it's better to have individual threads?

They were recently discontinued but if you can find anyone who still has a Winston passport in a 5wt it is awesome, especially lined about a half-weight heavy. If you happen to find it in a 6, let me know.
Also picked up an Allen Volant recently that I really like. It's a 10' 4 weight though, so I'm hesitant to compare it to any of their other sizes.

I for one would be game. just picked up a 9' 5wt Clearwater outfit from orvis over the weekend and plan to do a whole lot more fly fishing while living in Georgia. Completely different than fly fishing for reds who will eat just about anything in Louisiana. I've been humbled once or twice here trout fishing.

What's your first impression?
I'm looking closely at a 7'6" 5wt Clearwater rod with either a Battenkill or an Access reel...kicking around the idea for a Clearwater reel.

I can't really say as this is my first setup. I like it for what it is (decent entry level setup), casts well for Someone who doesn't really know what they're doing just yet. I needed something to get me through the next few years until I move back to Louisiana.

I'm already wanting to pick up a 5wt for some bass around here. This isn't good

Very cool video. I'm going on a 2 week fly fishing trip from Montana through Colorado, and my friend that's coming with me showed me this earlier. We'll mainly be fishing rivers as long as the flows are good, but I may take a day off to try to do this.

That's a good set up for the price.
I really like the BVK for what you pay for and that Lamson is a solid little piece for the price.

Tested out my new rig in the wind while I was at the beach. I need to work on my hauling but I was still able to work it well considering I've never used heavier than a 5wt. Is Orvis my best bet in BR for getting flies?

Do you know of anyone in LA doing custom rods around Mangrove/BVK/Axiom price point? I'm new to this game, but I like buying from the little guy
