Was really looking forward to seeing this.
Watched this movie last night.
holy shite it was amazing. i think it has got to be one of the best movies i've ever seen.
it was so well done in every way. super creepy mood from minute #1. super fascinating and unpredictable characters. the plot has you guessing the whole time. the ending is incredible and really makes you think. plus, titties.
10/10

i watched on monday.
i enjoyed it, found it extremely well written, executed, and acted but i don't think i liked it as much as everyone here. i'm more like an 8/10 person than a 10/10 person.
i do need a little help bc i think i missed something important. when nathan replays the scene of him entering the room with ava (tearing up the picture etc) what is said btwn them?
was it something along the lines of her hating him? i couldnt hear it.
i do appreciate the fact that the film is fodder for discussion and that's not something we get a lot of these days.

A simply incredible movie. Nathan I think may be one of my top 10 favorite characters ever. The guy is likable, awkward, despicable, and highly awkward, and he could achieve all of this in under 10 seconds. You can cut the tension in this film with a butter knife. It is one of the most intense movies I've ever seen, and it's not because of death, but just in the dialog and the singleness to it. I fell for it too hook, line, and sinker, and was hoping Caleb and Ava would just leave together with Nathan dead. This movie is fricking brilliant and a type of AI movie I've wanted to see for years, with the AI simply not out to kill everyone. Between this an Interstellar, we've had a fantastic few months of sci-fi. Now, make a realistic film on the Singularity (ie: no doomsday scenario), and then the sci-fi films I've been petitioning for years will be complete.
So close!! You left out "chops". Other than that, I think you have proven to everyone that you really like movies!! Ehh, I mean films!! You really like films!!

Anyone could predict that ending
it's easy to say you predicted the ending after it is over. but during the movie it is anything but predictable.
i don't understand how anyone can watch that movie and tell me with a straight face that they weren't wondering the whole time "oh shite, is nathan an AI?!" and "no fricking way, caleb is a AI!"
I was constantly questioning the entire reality. Who is an AI? Who is the experiment on? Caleb or Nathan? What is the experiment? Who can be trusted?
I call bullshite on the predictable ending thing.

I walked out of the theater thinking that it was pretty good, but after thinking about it for a few days/weeks, I think it was very good (not amazing, just really good).
I'm not the type that critiques every part of a movie and says "well, that's just too unbelievable, I can't take this seriously" i.e. mentioning the helicopter guy not asking any questions, etc.
However! This has been mentioned previously, but not only is it really hard to believe Caleb busted into Nathan's code so easily, but even after that, once the power came back on and we see that Ava is out of her cage.
1. Why does he not spend about 36 seconds at his computer to lock some doors?
2. Why is his decision to grab a dumbbell bar and go fight a robot?
I don't know why that even mattered so much to me; I think it has something to do with one of you guys' earlier post about getting the "Oceans 11" I one up you, then you one up me, etc. feel.

And yea, I also call the "easily predictable ending" comment supreme bullshite.
Yes, I can guess 15 endings for any movie from the first 5 minutes and one would likely be right, but that doesn't mean I "predicted" anything.
The fact that she was heartless enough to leave him caged up to die was quite telling of her "humanity." We keep mentioning aspects that ultimately prove she "passes" the Turing test, but she absolutely neglects to have the empathy/understanding that she is putting an innocent man to the same terrible fate that was her own just moments prior.
Few options:
1. Is her lack of morality in the end indicative of Nathan's true nature (which we learn in the movie), as he is the one who programmed her?
Even if there is a logical, or self-preservation, reason for leaving Caleb behind, it doesn't explain why she doesn't mind that he is going to die. There are plenty of ways to keep Caleb quiet without killing him. And practically infinite time to make that decision.

that wasnt the point of my saying that. everyone was acting like they were prophets by saying they called the ending, and I was merely stating that I, like anyone else, could say "the robot will manipulate him the whole time," which means nothing. the journey to that ending was completely unpredictable and exciting, but, at a basic level, the ending was probably considered a possibility by many. I had a sneaking suspicion far before the movie's release because of familiarity with Garland's earlier scripts

I don't see the big deal. It was obvious she was manipulating him to get her out.
I was however not expecting her to be as good at manipulation without any true feelings towards Caleb.
Thought she might actually care for him. This is why we are doomed by AI. They would always be able to convince us they mean no harm.
She gonna be trouble in the real world.
Prepare thy anus for our AI overlords.
Liked how Caleb was so convinced by her abilities that he doubted his own humanity.
Good movie.
Sort of the evil version of HER. In HER, I kept expecting something bad or twisted to happen.

i thought that was going to be a dream (the razor scene). i was actually ok with it being a dream, when nathan says he sees caleb do it on camera then i think it was a little over the top.
definitely not my favorite part of the movie.
i think most of the characters' actions are believable and things that most people may do in the same situation (although we know caleb is sort of out there by the end) but i didn't like that part. maybe it was to illustrate how far he'd gone but i think it was unnecessary.

I liked this turn a lot. It made a lot of sense in the film.

I read a theory where people think that when Ava turned around at the end she was going back for Caleb.
I dont think thats the case.
Also Oscar Isaac might be my favorite actor out there right now. Im actually worried about him getting caught up in the Star Wars franchise.

HER AI at least expressed a deep sense of love and compassion IMHO passing the Turing Test as opposed to Ava leaving Caleb in a securely locked room with no power without even acknowledging his screams for help as she was leaving.

Huh? No. That ruins the tough blow the film delivered.

Did Harrison "get caught up?"

I agree

In a sense, yeah. Harrison Ford is known for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, BladeRunner, Jack Ryan, etc. Most of which are franchises. Would you say that Ford has had a career of true actors roles?

Oscar Isaac was awesome; I haven't seen him in anything else, but I did wonder whether he was perfectly made for that character or he made that character perfect.

right, right. I get that. I was more just adding on to what you were saying.
i agree with your original post as well. definitely one of the best movies i've ever seen. i'm actually a bit surprised that it only has a 78 on Metacritic. Not that that's a bad score, but man... this movie was seriously awesome.
