I Want More Hard Sci-Fi - Why are there so few good movies in this genre?

I finally saw Interstellar the other night. LOVED IT.

I've been in the mood to watch more movies in that genre, but it seems like I've seen them all. And there aren't very many out there.

Hopefully the success of Interstellar and the cult following of Moon will get a few more made in the future.

ex machina is out right now and it is much better than interstellar.

if that's "hard" enough for you

I do agree though, a very mistreated genre right now.

Interstellar, Prestige, Moon, Sunshine, Ex Machina (haven't seen this yet), Primer, Upstream Color, Her, Looper, Under the Skin, Children of Men, Dredd (ok maybe not 'hard' sci fi), Pandorum (not as bad as people think), TImecrimes, Outlander, Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, New Apes Movies, Snowpiercer, Source Code, Europa Report...

Science Fiction is doing fine. I always want more sci fi, but there's lots of choices out there.

Europa Report is one of the better scifi movies in recent memory IMO.

There have been a few good scifi movies in the past year. Interstellar and Ex Machina were both very good, Chappie was pretty good.

Check out Coherence (2014). Not sure if it qualifies as "hard" scyfy but I found it to be heady and extremely thrilling.

Zowie said he intended to make more films set in that universe - but, here we are, 5 years later and :crickets:

Because people love to shite on anything different. Interstellar was a fantastic Scifi movie. People can't enjoy it because they're too busy pointing out every flaw and plot issue. IMHO, it's as close as anyone has ever come to something original since 2001.

See, I also love Star Trek TMP. Plenty of people hate the pacing, but to me it's the essence of Star Trek and a quality Scifi movie.

Same here, Ive been looking for movies like Alien, Prometheus, predator, war of the worlds or independence day. I cant find anything else. Also, there are barely any time travel movies.

As others said, Ex Machina is out now. The Martian with Matt Damon is coming out at the end of the year. It's like Apollo 13 meets Hard Sci-Fi. The Expanse TV series on Syfy this fall is based of a good hard sci fi book series. Have you seen Oblivion?

Ex Machina is the best film by far of the year so far. I highly recommend you watch it in theaters. You can cut the tension with a butter knife, and not in a slasher flick mentality. Just a meeting of the minds. It's simply fricking brilliant.
