If you’ve watched the trailer for the much-hyped “Black Mass,” you may find yourself asking two questions: First, what is that accent Johnny Depp is working? And second, why does this feel so familiar?

quote:

Well, of course you know, because you’ve seen this before — just with Joe Pesci playing the heavy instead. The movie was “Goodfellas

quote:

Everything about “Black Mass” seems like a blatant rip-off of “Goodfellas” — but maybe that’s okay, because Martin Scorsese’s mobster masterpiece is possibly the most ripped-off movie of our time.

quote:

The movie turns 25 this year

quote:

“Goodfellas” wasn’t the biggest moneymaker of 1990; it couldn’t even beat out “Look Who’s Talking Too.” It also wasn’t the most celebrated, losing the best director and picture Oscars to Kevin Costner and “Dances With Wolves.” But it has to be one of the most imitated.

They missed "Swingers".
And "Casino" is a rip-off of "Goodfellas".

Scorsese directed both Goodfellas and Casino. Both mob movies with the same actors and similar tone given same director. But I wouldn't call it a rip off.

Why? Because it's a mob movie? Also Casino> Goodfellas

I love how in Swingers they sit around the table and talk about how film makers are ripping off Scorsese all the while doing the exact camera shots throughout the movie.

Probably one of my favorite movies of all time along with Goodfellas.

I love Casino but this is absolutely false.

Blow is a true story. How would it be a rip-off?

I just don't get the love for Goodfellas. I thought it was good but I just don't think of it as one of the greatest movies of all time like some do.

Swingers wasn't ripping off Goodfellas. It was parodying Scorsese's style. That's not exactly the same thing.

And the same author, Peleggi, wrote Wiseguys (Goodfellas) and Casino. Not a ripoff. Casino was really good just not Goodfellas

I hate when real life events rip each other off.

Two films directed by Scorcese, and based on books written by Nicholas Pileggi. Casino isn't a ripoff, it's another look at the sixties/seventies Mafia subculture, from a slightly different angle. I like to think of them as the first two installments of a Mob trilogy, in which part three was never made.

Good fellas is in my top 3, maybe #1. I qjuote De Niro's lines for my friends all the time especially

"Now now now, you insulted him a little bit. You got a little out of order yourself."

Hell I quote Pesci in that scene too.

agree.

i think one thing that hurts casino for some people is that some of the main characters become very unlikable during the movie. only ace stays the same until the end.

in goodfellas, the three main guys stay very likable until the very end, minus maybe henry. even when he turned rat at the end, i doubt many really hated him.

i dunno, just an opinion.

Well, they were real people, although Pileggi took a lot of liberties with their characters. Ginger really was a mess, Nicky really was a murderous thug. Ace/Lefty probably comes out looking better than he really was IRL. He claimed that he never had anyone whacked, but I dunno.

Here's a look at the real "Ace," in a scene that was adapted for the movie LINK

I thought MS kinda ripped off himself with woof of Wall Street. There were a lot if parallels between the stories of the main characters. Obviously Hill was playing a more dangerous game.
