So about a month ago I was in a meeting about one of our departments here possibly being eliminated. I was asked to find out what they do for my group and get back to them. In the meantime, I am friends with one of the people...she is an OT 4 but IRL 7. No pics but would piihb. So I sent the info and told my boss about it. Haven't heard anything till Tuesday when the person called me on my cell and asked me if I thought she was being fired. Told her I didn't know anything. Told her to continue to try and talk to her boss to find out what was going on. She didn't get a bonus and then was asked to come in on her day off for a company meeting. So this morning I come in and of course, she was fired.

Should I have told her or not? She is married with three kids so nothing to gain there. We are friends at work but not outside work.

Let me hear it.

Wasn't your place to tell her. Nothing she could've done about it anyway

Your actions were reasonable by any reasonable person's standard.

Doesn't matter now. Would it have mattered then? Probably not except she would have been depressed earlier. Maybe you could have "worked out some kind of deal".

Business is business. You did not get her fired. If she (and/or her department) was no longer needed then why keep spending the money?

Sorry she has kids and you are friends with her but better you than her. On the other hand, you could always offer her your job.

Wait, you have an entire department that does nothing for the rest of the working group?

Government workers?

Depends on the individual. If they are professional and you believe trustworthy I would probably warn them so they could look for a job. Its easier to get a new job while you are still employed.

But... you also have to be careful and know that this individual doesn't go off the rails and jeopardize your job.

What possible good could come from her knowing a week beforehand? What bad things for you could have happened? You did the right thing.

What would telling her have changed or accomplished?

Just that she would have known ahead of time. Only a handful of people knew this so they would have put 2 and 2 together and then I would probably be fired.

Sucks because I'm sure that wasn't a fun position to be in, but you did the right thing. If you had told her, she wouldn't have been able to stop it from happening anyway. Only result would likely have been you getting fired along with her for telling her.
