How many here have been out fishing and heard your rod buzz?

The tell tale sound that it is time to get the hell out of there.

Had it happen twice yesterday evening. Moved about 2 miles between occurrences and then said the hell with it and went home.

Fishing one day and got the buzz every time I raised my rod.. Told my buddy and he raised his, nothing happened.. So I said try mine... It buzzed.. I had a cork handle he had rubber... We noticed our hair was standing up and freaked out... Young and dumb... He said we need to ground ourselves so we both put our feet in the water!!! Well we decided to haul arse away from the storm... Stopped after a few miles and our hair was standing still but pointing towards the storm... I'll never forget that...

Have heard it from the mast on my sailboat. It's pretty chilling because you know you're not getting out of there fast and you're the biggest target around.

Yup. Casted and my line almost floated in the air right before a lightning strike. It was surreal. We gtfo with a quickness.

I've heard it too and the lightning probably heard my high sphincter tone...
This doesn't mean you wont get hit on a sailboat, but peace of mind you'll probably not get fried LINK

Everything on the vessel with a circuit is a different story....

Yeah I got hit once though. Was not pretty what it did to the electronics. Had to replace standing rigging, all wiring, all electronics, and fill a huge hole it evaporated in my lead wing keel as it exited.

I'll sail in damn near any wind if the waves aren't too big, but lighting just creeps me the hell out.

I have had it happen twice. One time the line actually floated up into the air. My buddy and I looked at it for half a second before we both hooked to the arse wagon.

Happens all the time offshore. Never with a rod I was holding, but with the antennas and the rods in the t-top for sure. That's when you pay more attention to the radar and head away from the sh*t coming your way.

Never once. thank god. One of my friends was struck by lightening and died playing softball. I don't mess with the lightning unless it's white and in a jar.

I was on a boat once during a storm that had st elmo's fire on the mast. Weird looking stuff. We thought the mast was on fire but it was just glowing from the ball of electrically charged plasma. It's supposed to be good luck. I didn't see it that way.

Sitting in my backyard, a bolt of lightning hit 4 feet from me and blew me up against a wall. Couldn't see for about 2 minutes, couldn't hear for over an hour (ears rang for days) and my skin was red on the side that was facing the bolt.

Back in high school a bolt hit my friends car and blew out his back tire. When I told the story to my teacher, she didn't believe me and marked me as tardy.

I actually had a bolt hit the water and electricity come up the line through the rod and into me.

It felt like someone open palm smacked me in the forehead. No pain. Went black for 1 sec. Then we hauled arse. Whole way in we were getting shocked holing onto the Ttop rails.
