Baby coming in a month and im in charge of getting the monitor.
so far decided on
Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor LINK
any other recommendations. I don't want a WiFi monitor or something that needs a phone/tablet to see whats going on

Summer infant best view. No wifi.

whichever ones with video that were being hacked so outsiders could view the stream, i wouldn't get those

The one that fits best in your closet, 'cause you'll never take it out for baby #2. By that time, your parenting ESP will have kicked in.

This is the one we've got. Decent range on it. And you can add up to 4 cameras to the monitor

I agree with this too. Dedicated is the way to go. Much easier to glance over and see what's going on, and hear anything at any time.
Video is definitely a great thing to have. I'm sure most of them are in color now, but don't consider that priority, because most of your time viewing it will be at night, when the nightvision is on and therefore not in color.
Most of them are moving to 2.4GHz band, such as the one you linked, so just be aware that it may interfere with your other 2.4ghz wifi devices depending on placement of various things (monitor, camera, router, etc). I have one on the 2.4Ghz band and it doesn't seem to affect anything, though. I also have one on the 900 MHz band. The 900 mhz spectrum is more prone to physical interference. I sometimes have to angle the 900mhz monitor slightly or else it'll show static interference if I'm sitting up in the bed in one particular position.
That said, the one you linked is a bit excessive. You're paying for features that may not even matter. For example, the remote pan/tilt/zoom sounds great in theory, but we're talking about a newborn here; the camera is just going to be fixated on a crib 24 hours a day, right? The lens interchangeability sounds pretty gimmicky too. Other than those two features it seems to be no different/better than other monitors for half the price.

I have two kids, and one on the way. We have never used one. You wI'll sleep very light, and will hear every cry.

Video isn't needed. Get off your arse and check on the child when you hear the monitor go off. You're not going to watch that while you're sleeping.

Video monitor is one of the greatest inventions ever. Especially for a new born. Especially for a first time mom. I added cameras and now have 3. One in each kids room and one in toy room. It is an incredibly convient baby item to have. If you don't appreciate it, I promise your wife will!

Buy an angelcare or one that has a breathing / heartbeat sensor under the mattress. It may save your baby from sids.

You need one with good range and decent infrared pickup to see clearly in the dark. No wifi needed. We have a Motorola for one and a cheaper vtech for the other. The vtech was half the price and I actually like it better.
