I said the exact same thing on here last summer and got slammed

I read the trout section in the report and didn't see anything on the current state of the trout population.

why? its not a bass. you're trying to guilt trip me into feeling bad that I eat trout weekly?
btw, trout heads works great as crab bait, if anyone just throws the carcass away. that's the injun in me.

h
you serious Clark?
pretty sure the limits are set on what the fishery can sustain, whether its ten guys in ten boats or 10 guys in one boat.

at about a group of 5 keeping 125? If everyone keeps 25, those numbers could get out of hand really fast.

i guess i'm the only guy on here that is old enough to remember NO limit, size or number, on specs. we used to load the ice chest with "cigar specs". so did everyone else. 25 fish per person is fine. the only ones that would want to see it reduced are the guides because it makes for a shorter workday for them and easier to say their customers caught their limit.

I'm pretty sure the fisheries managers want the limit reduced, so yeah.

Actually.... the stock assessment that was completed last year by LWF stated the opposite.
Louisiana speckled trout in good shape
With the internet these days, everyone has the ability to voice their concern or displeasure over everything, including their inability to catch speckled trout. Last year was a tough year. The severe winter put a hurt on the traditional "summertime" speckled trout fishing. This caused a huge social media freakout - centered around lowering the trout limits because of BP Oil. Fortunately, our state fisheries biologists use scientific data to establish our size and creel limits. This data shows no issue with the trout population - therefore there is no need to change the limits. I fully believe that you'll see an excellent trout season this year because of the relatively mild winter and lack of pressure from last year.

look, I appreciate your conservation perspective. But some things are better left to individual choice. Way too much money, time, and effort is expended to make anyone feel guilty for keeping 25 specks. I'm all for keeping less if YOU wan to do so. But I think it should be an individual's choice.
We got in the mess in the first place because people are too stupid to make decisions on their own. If there were no limits our fishery would be decimated because people can not control themselves.
Keeping 25 specs isn't the issue. It's keeping 25 specs every time just because it's legal. This mentality is somewhat unique to certain, shall I say, demographics. There is a common denominator that goes along with that way of thinking.
I'm not trying to shame anyone or make anyone feel bad. At the end of the day there needs to be an effort to educate more license holders that way we can keep our 25 fish limit. The high limit is great for people who only make out a few times a year yet we continue to abuse the privilege.
At some point we need to stop looking to someone else to decide how many fish we can keep and start educating our fishermen.

lived it as a kid. Between gill netters and no limits, catching trout was tough. Redfish weren't exactly common either. Bitch all you want about CCA, but they've done excellent work IMO. Times are good in the angling world.

"most of the data through 2013" How about some new data from the LaWLF that isn't based on research from 2 years ago (of which included a fishing ban in 2010 and limited recreational fishing in 2011).

I'm not trying to guilt trip you. You're only entertaining the arguments that want and avoiding the others. It's not about the limits, it's about abusing the limits.
You do realize that if you ate 4 fillets a week, you would only need to limit out four times a year? This is what makes the the 25 fish limit awesome. It's the people who stack the fish like cord wood in their chest freezers that need to reevaluate their practices.

From the NOLA Article:
Although most of the information Blanchet presented did not include 2014, one slide did. It showed gill-net harvest by the state's biologists for April through September every year dating back to 1986. The data had been crunched to a rating of 1.0 being indicative of a typical year. In both 2013 and 2014, most of the catches were at or above 1.0. In fact, the harvest in the 1-inch-mesh gill nets in 2013 was the highest ever.

I'm lost on what the argument is. The BP spill is to blame but the trout population has gotten worse since the 2013 info due to the BP spill?

Obama, is that you?
no offense, but I can decide whether or not I feel like cleaning 25 specks on a given day. some times I do, some times I don't. Last thing I want is you making the decision for me.
FTR, I only get to fish a few times a year. If I get a chance to catch a limit I do so. If I fished daily or even weekly, I'd probably do it differently. But I don't so I take advantage of the laws as they are written. I also shoot a limit of ducks if given the chance. I dont feel bad about it at all.

. if any of yall want to keep 10 fish, then go for it, but I'll continue to keep what I legally can.
I don't speck fish often, but I actually do go in with that mentality. I have no need to load up on fish. If I red fish every weekend, I usually kept one or two to grill that week for the wife and I. Throw the rest back. I don't get the need to fill gallon ziplock bags in the freezer with fish. If you've got someone to give them to, that's fine. But if I were to do that, it would end up going bad. No reason at all to keep what you don't reasonably expect to eat. I still have a great time. I just love the chance to be fishing.

Vanishing paradise should keep their noses in coastal restoration issues. Goobers.

I am all for conservation and I understand what you're saying, the limit is set so that the trout population that we are fortunate to have isn't abused. As long as you follow the limits that are set, you aren't "abusing" them.
The limits are set based on averages: average number of fishing trips per year, average numbers of trout caught per year, average trout population each year, etc. It all evens out in the end.
