that formation united used back in the early/mid 2000s with scholes playing behind RvN and in front of keane/veron with beckham and giggs wide was effective. could have been better had veron panned out a little more.

Vieira and Keane would be the best comparison, but that's a debate that deserves its own thread.

If I was going to make a list of best mid fielders (BPL) since 2000. No order
Holding Mid- Roy Keane, Vieira, Edgar Davids, Claude Makelele
Central/Attacking Mid- Scholes, Gerrard, Fabergas (debatable), Lampard, Xabi Alonso

I'm sure there are alot more, but those are off the top of my head.

Truth. Zlatan picked Zlatan, Messi and Vieira in his all-time dream team...but no Ronaldo.

Hazard as a clear number 3?

LMAO. Dude has done jack shite on the big stage. And is only hyped because the EPL severely lacks on mercurial individual talent at the moment.

Suarez without a doubt. Even Robben still deserves a shout. I don't give a shite who he bites, he's magical. Even Bale deserves to be head and shoulders above Hazard despite not putting up "numbers" in Madrid

I'm a Hazard fanboy, as I've said on this board several times, but I think that he's got a really big issue in his mentality that could keep him from ever reaching the very top of the game. He has a real big problem with motivation that was clear during the World Cup and his time with Chelsea. He's absolutely incredible when he turns it off, but it's almost like he coasts through games until he decides it's time to attack.

When he's playing at 100%, though, he's a truly special player to watch. I personally think with the right attitude, he could reach that level. His potential is ridiculously high, but he needs to get it right between the ears. In fact, I feel like the entire Belgium squad at the World Cup had that same problem. I had them as a dark horse, but they really struggled to get everyone on the same page.

Easy killer, was tongue in cheek (obviously).

Gerrard was great in his day, he had some really, really good seasons, and he stayed loyal to his hometown team (yes, at the cost of glory elsewhere), which earns him points in my book.

Was he top 5 in the world ever? Probably not, top 5 at his position in the world? I say yes, and I think the endorsements from his peers say all you really need to hear about that (Zidane, Giggs, and Pirlo have all endorsed Stevie-G as a boss).

To the guy who compared Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes and Viera to Joe effing Cole, get out of here with that shite.

Alonso? The best #10 in EPL history is easily Bergkamp. It isn't even a debate.

I'd actually rate a player like Wayne Rooney in the top five as well. While he doesn't put up the statistics of the other two, he's been amazingly consistent, while playing in a variety of positions. He now has had ten seasons of scoring ten or more goals in the league, which is an amazing record. He's played behind the striker, at striker, on the left and in central midfield, and can still produce for the team. He's been a fantastic player and I don't think he gets the credit he deserves.

You know, I came into this thread wanting to say this and thought I'd get decimated, but I agree 100%. He's been my favorite player at my favorite club for almost 10 years so I'm biased, but I feel like he's truly unappreciated. I understand that he plays for United and never delivered for England in the manner that they thought he would early on, but the amount of shite he gets is almost unparalleled in world football. If he weren't United or English, we'd see far more love for him, but the English hype machine really set him up for failure.

He can play and contribute at a high level at almost any position outside of the back line. Obviously, his best position is at the striker, but there's a reason he's kept on the field for both England and United even when another forward is heating up and placed at the top. I think he'll benefit greatly if Harry Kane is the real deal long term, and England would really be scary. His passing is pretty damned strong for a striker, and he's got deceptive pace that I think a lot of people overlook. He scores some pretty incredible goals. From a technical standpoint, I don't think England could really ask for much more than they have in Rooney outside of Ronaldo or Messi. He was decimated for his performance in Brazil, but he was directly involved with every goal they scored in the tournament. He's had ten or more goals in 11 consecutive seasons in the Premier League, including some monster seasons in 09/10 (26) and 11/12 (27). When you consider him being played less advanced positions a substantial amount the past few seasons and the extra weight he's carrying with a full head of hair that wasn't there before, his ability to continue to deliver is even more impressive.

When you look at him from a personality standpoint, he really is a player you want on your squad. In the past, he was a hothead and liability, but especially in the past two seasons, he's really impressed me with his patience and leadership (outside of the straight red he got against West Ham). In a lot of the matches of the Moyes era, he was one of the only players really pushing and playing hard after fans raked him over the coals in the offseason before for all of the talk about him wanting out. Louis van Gaal comes in, and he immediately gets on with Rooney and makes him captain. He becomes captain of England not long after. For both, there were a ton of people who claimed it was a mistake, and he's done a wonderful job (Even though they may have just made him captain so him being on the referee constantly would appear as him just being a passionate captain instead of a pissed off player ).

I'll be the first to admit that Rooney isn't the mind-blowing statistical player that Ronaldo and Messi are, but if I'm building a squad, there are very few players in the world I'd want before Rooney. He's consistent, versatile, passionate, and has tons of skill. I'd say he's top five in the world based on how complete of a footballer he is.

As evidence of him still being a boss, I submit this for the court's consideration:

EDIT: As a side note, we really need to get Chicken to get GFY supported on the quickness. If anything, just to reduce the bandwidth for gifs.

You don't like Joe Cole, that's fine, but when I think back to when he played for Chelsea you can't say he was shite. He played a big role for Chelsea, and I hated him because he always seemed to score against United.
I always had the feeling that if he wasn't as injury prone he would have done a lot better, but I understand if you don't want to put him in with those other players.

To the guy that doesn't think Xabi was one of the better Central Midfielders. Who all would you put ahead of him? He was an amazing passer.

Only Pirlo is a better at the same position. Xabi isn't a 10. That is what is being discussed. Bergkamp was the best and it isn't even close.
