I thought it was raised to 6.50 sometime in 04/05.

I admit I am WAYYYYY too generous when I tip.
I promise you-you will never miss a single penny you give away.
You want to make someone's week-tip the garbage man.
Those guys straight up appreciate it.

As a matter of fact, you and the other know-it-alls who have mentioned this, Sonic does not pay carhops minimum wage. My son was recently hired there and they get $4 an hour. They greatly depend on tips to make the job worthwhile.
Still doesn't change the fact that I am not the kids employer and I do not pay his salary.
Look up to complain, not down

I'm always pro-tipping in these threads, but for whatever reason i don't feel too bad when i don't have a single to give the car hop.

I usually get a couple of bags of Sonic ice for the weekend, so I tip them to fill the bags and carry them to my vehicle. They do seem to appreciate a tip more than most.

If that is true, then the other poster is right that they pay below minimum wage.
I definitely made $5 and change in 2006. Averaged about $20 in tips per night.

I don't either. If I have it, I obviously tip. But I don't avoid the place due to not having $1. If they expected their carhops to rely so heavily on tips, they'd let you tip on the card.
Fun fact: When I worked there, they didn't have card machines on the signs yet; we had to run the cards inside. And they could tip on the card--and lots of people did.

I don't tip them unless I have some random order.
Posted on 4/13/15 at 12:07 pm to PotatoChip
If my order comes out to be like $9.85 and I pay with a $10, I tell them keep the change.

From what I've gathered from friends that have worked at Sonic, pay varies based on what the owner is willing to offer the person. So, yes, some carhops make minimum wage. But the carhops I knew a couple years ago only made around $5/hour plus tips.

If they had a touch-screen with an option to tip outside I would tip every time. If they are going to make it impossible to tip without having a few small bills on me, then I'm not going to tip if I don't have a few small bills on me.
