Which makes me really, really, really wish we hadn't won that meaningless game at the end of the season.

Absolutely not. Although I believe that Williams is the surest bet in the draft, there is no guarantee he'll dominate. We thought Sedrick Ellis was a "can't miss" and we traded up (not too much....10th to 7th) and we know how that turned out. We wanted to trade 2 first rounders to move up more to get Dorsey ; that would have been disastrous.
I still cringe when I think about trading 17&18 for Jonathan Sullivan

Well said and that's why I'm warming to the idea of taking Dupree. He can cover and hold the edge on runs and shows pass rush potential. The first two are way more important to being a complete player. If you can't do the first two you'll never have a chance to pass rush.
Our biggest issue last year was covering short passes (blues posted some stats that we gave up by far the most yards to backs in the passing game). That kept us from having time to get to the QB. You cover the short passes and defend the run better and Jordan, Hicks, and Galette will get to the QB.
Side note: Galette was about equal to his 2013 year this past season and Hicks was actually better rushing the passer. Jordan was the only one who regressed because he relies on power instead of speed to get to the QB and not having time killed him.

I do think we add another WR to the mix at some point. I think we need at least three reliable guys. Cooks, Colston, Watson, Hill, and....we need something else.
Look, I saw you compare this to 09. This couldn't be father from the truth. Colston is not the same player he was 6 years ago- he's slower and injury prone. You don't really know what you have in Cooks.
Imagine if Colston goes down, it gets even uglier for that group really really quickly.

All I know is that every time I saw UK play Dupree was all over the field making plays. I'd have no issue if the Saints took him. Combine numbers are cute and make players money, but I've seen the dude do it on the field. All I need to know

I'm not going to pray for Toon or Morgan to become studs. I think we should get a guy like Strong at 31 and pray we get one of the two elite OL. After that, go ALL defense...unless there is a can't miss defensive prospect at 13.

If only Joe Morgan could get his head on straight he could step up and be a major player for us....the talent is obviously there, but he just needs to mature.....After the DUI then we cut him last year, I was very very shocked to see that we re-signed him again....Maybe/hopefully the coaches have been in contact with him enough over the last several months to know that he has gotten his act together and that's the reason we brought him back
Also Toon, hopefully he can build off of the late season success he had last year, although we have to wait until we see it in live preseason action because we have learned that we cannot trust his "best camp" stories that the were written about him last year
Also interested to see the development of Brandon Coleman & Seantavius Jones, hopefully they can contribute.

A WR early is in the plans we have to think
They are going to have work really hard to piss me off this year....but I know they can find a way

Only player I want to move up for is Leonard Williams. He's been mocked to Tennessee for a while but I think the Titans will change their mind and go Mariota. Might cause Williams to fall to #5. Doubt it though

In my mind, the worse draft move this team has ever made.
Some will argue it was the Ricky Williams...not me. He brought excitement to an otherwise dreadful team and he was productive. On top of that, we got 2 first round picks and moved up in later rounds due to a swap in positions with the Dolphins.
Guess what one of those 1st rounders was used for? Yep, Sullivan.
What did we get for Sullivan? Nothing.
ETA: Sorry about moving off topic...just pisses me off.

It's exactly why I want him. I think a good scenerio would be trading down if possible to gather up another 2nd or 3rd and taking him in the 20 range. That's a big risk though because he may not last that long. He's a wild card as to where he will be drafted

I would be more than ok with Dupree in the 1st round. A lot could change, and a lot of the talk could be BS, but it seems like the closer we get to the draft, Dupree is being talked about as a top 10 pick.

If you have a LB that only can pass rush, you create a weakness in the run game that will be exploited
And here is the best & worse thing about draft season when it comes to defensive players. Everyone makes assumptions based on stats, physical measurables & personal favorites without even actually trying to understand the role of each individual player in their collegiate scheme. Some guys are going to he asked to take on blockers while someone else is assignment is to make the tackle. People are going to look at that as, "well this guy is poor against the run because he can't get off of blocks or his tackles numbers are low." It's a bunch of crap.
quote:
If not then we will be consistently giving up 7 yard passes to RB, TE and Slots.
Guess what? This happens to even the best pass defending LB's & best defenses. It's what allowed the Patriots to beat the Seahawks in the past Super Bowl against the best secondary & one of the best linebacker coverage groups in the league. No matter how hard you try to downplay it, running backs & tight ends will always be considered a mismatch in offensive coordinators eyes. We both will be dead & gone & that fact will remain true. Just look at what the Saints did to Patrick Willis & Navarro Bowman in the 2011-12 playoff game. At the time, that tandem was probably the best cover linebackers in the game & the Saints made them both look silly in the second half of that game.
quote:
The best example I can think of with this is Shawne Merriman. Every year he was overrated as a player because he could rush the passer.
Really? It couldn't have been because of the steriods. Naw, it couldn't have.
quote:
I don't care how well you rush the passer; if you can't perform at the other critical aspects of your game then you are not worthy to be a 1st round pick.
Well somebody needs to tell these guys that they didn't deserve to be 1st round selections & tell the teams that drafted them, they fricked up.
This guy almost single handily ruined the attempt for a perfect season in 2009. How? Why? Because Payton didn't think he would play because of a neck injury. He didn't game plan for him. Bushrod got no help from the backs or the tight ends & he got his lunch frickin ate one on one.
Backs & tight ends can't catch passes when they have to stay back to help in pass pro. If they do happen to go out in the pass pattern, their routes won't be aggressive, attacking routes. It will be to go out 3-5 yards & sit as a checkdown. There's always more than one way to skin a cat.

This maybe the least likely scenario. The Titans already got burned by one 1st round spread, running QB in Jake Locker. I'm not quite sure they are in a race to make the same mistake again.
This draft is nowhere near that 2011 draft. They had to try to get a bust in the top ten that year. Ridiculous talent in the top of that draft.
