St Johns is in NYC, but so is Fordham, a school with similar resources and student population. Fordham has a decent old-time tradition too, although they've never been to a final 4 (St JOhns has been to 1) and aren't in as good a league. I just don't see St Johns as anything special.

I seriously considered Fordham for grad school. I don't see the comparison between St. John's and Fordham though. St. John's is a top 10 winning team and has a top 10 winning percentage.

Fordham hasn't been in the NCAA Tournament since 1990. St. John's was in it this year. St. John's also plays in a better conference (whatever the name of it is) and plays the majority of their games in Madison Square Garden - the mecca of basketball.

St. John's is still big enough of a school to attract and hire big time coaches (Steve Lavin and now Chris Mullen).

I was just using Fordham to show that the NYC advantage goes only so far in this era (as in even Fordham was making NCAA tournaments in the era in which St Johns made their final 4).
But then again, I don't know what Villanova has over them either.

Texas (the state) has two major metro areas, both of which have produced a good share of prospects. (Duke's title team had one player from DFW and one from Houston.)

If Shaka can keep a decent number of players in-state he can build a good program there, even with football being king in Texas and baseball being their best sport (in terms of tournament appearances).

Texas is a place where anyone can win, perhaps tennessee as well. St. John's and IU, to an extent, need guys with strong regional ties whereas any coach worth his salt should be successful at a place like Texas.

Really? Have you looked at Tennessee's facilities?

Tennessee is much more of a basketball state than Texas. The interest is there. More so than Texas. The conference, as a whole, is easier to win in. The administration just can't get out of its own way with bonehead hires and decisions.

Bruce Pearl proved that you can go to Tennessee and in 2 years grab a couple of 2 seeds in the NCAA tournament. Sure he's shady, but it proves that if you try hard you can get to the top of Tier 2 in the SEC in no time? What has changed in the last 10 years in the SEC, besides Kentucky and Florida generally distancing themselves from the pack and the rest of the conference being a crapshoot?

Oh no.
Big 12 does a great job gigging their RPIs. Texas made the NCAAs after a ridiculously mediocre season.
SEC has many "if they'd ever get their act together" schools (including Tennessee).

1. Texas(weather, resources and tons of instate talent)
2. Indiana(The state loves hoops, still a great job)
3. Tenn(Good SEC job)
4. St Johns(was a great job, now not so much. Big East has declined.)

Texas has all the pieces in place but they had been stuck with an above average HC. Put a great coach there and they could be a power.
