It's around 10 miles out.

Go to Horn Island instead.

Keep on an eye on the weather. 17' can get pretty small fast when a squall pops up.

Yep, though watch out for East Ship Island, it is a nude beach.

roughly 11 miles

Bring a lot of sun screen. The Islands out there are nice and the water is decent. Water is green instead of brown. You can go to the back side of the islands and get into the surf. Most stay anchored up on the North Side of the Islands though.

In a perfect world yes, and I have seen much smaller there. An open bow rider that is low to the water is baaaaad news if the weather picks up any at all.

Fish, drink, tan, usual beach stuff.

Yes

Really? it might depend on your speed.

Ship island is ok, esp. if you take the ferry. If you are taking your own boat I would suggest Horn, Petit Bois, East Ship, or even Cat island. Less people there and less rules. Overnight camping allowed on all islands except West Ship.

We have a boat but when we do the ship island days, we just go on the ferry. One less thing to deal with or worry about. We also rent chairs and umbrella through them too. Less to carry. Only thing you need is a rolling cooler. Trust me. Don't take anything but a rolling cooler. Water is much better at the islands. One advantage of ship over horn is bathrooms and showers.

ETA: if you're gonna run your own boat to any island of choice, I like Cat Island the best. Less beach crowd than Horn. Horn can get packed on weekends.

As others have stated it's an open water run, if you have to run 10 miles in open water with storms kicking up it won't be fun at all.

17' is just big enough to get you in trouble with that run IMO.

would the surf be comparable to Lake Pontchartrain?

we got caught 2 weekends ago out there and got beat up a little bit.

where would be the best place to put in the water?

mu uncle recently bought a house on the beach in waveland, would that area be a fun area to take the boat and kids.

I have only been in Lake P and Tchef. River growing up. Looking for some fun places to bring the kids.

mississippi sound can be brutal to dangerous when t-storms pop up. it can be a long, miserable, scary trip back if you must cross during the worst of it

Mrs. Couyon and I spent a great afternoon out at Ship Island last year. We took the ferry out there but there were quite a few small boats that had gone out and anchored on the land side. The beach is pretty nice. There is an old fort there that was pretty interesting. There was also a lot of bird life there then. Got great pics of a least bittern, which I had never seen and there were many hummingbirds also.
As some have said, if a squall were to kick up, I imagine that 17 footer would be scary!
ETA: Ditto on the rolling ice chest if you go by ferry. It's a pretty good walk to the gulf-side beach.

It's a pretty easy run out of Gulfport harbor. You shouldn't have too much problem if you're going out on days where seas are 1 foot or less especially in the morning. The wind and waves tend to kick up in the summer afternoons though and it can get interesting for boats a good bit larger than yours. I would look for days on this site where the forecast 1 foot or less. LINK

A family in a 17' boat, 5 miles from land, in the Gulf can be very dangerous (as you know). I personally wouldn't do it unless I knew exactly what I was doing. I'd either follow someone, or start off on closer to land trips.

Be careful of Cat, though. There's a reason there's less people, a lot of it's still private - especially the beach.

I used to go to Cat Island on a jetski with a group of other jetskiers.

As others have said, it can get really squirrely, really fast out there and a 17ft boat will feel the effects quicker. It's very similar to Lake P in that aspect. There's also a lot of ship/barge traffic through there as that is the ship channel and that causes the wave to pick up also.

Ship Island is all public and can be accessed by anyone. There's an old fort out there that's cool to see.

Cat Island will have less people and more room for you to have a quiet area of the beach to yourself. Unfortunately, a good bit of the southern, public area was lost to Katrina but there's still some there.

It's also a closer, more straight-south run from Long Beach Marina to Cat Island (8.2 miles) than it is from Gulfport Marina to Ship Island (12.7 miles).

It used to look like this (The shaded green areas are the public areas):

Now it looks like this:

If you're not used to handling foul weather riding, I wouldn't do it. I've been out there many times in a 14ft skiff and the tugboat channel can kick up some scary waves during a squall. Gulfport shipping channel can be even hairier. Our go-to plan while growing up was to let people know where you're going and wear lifejackets on the way out to the island. If you're caught coming from or going to in a squall with a boat that small, you have to pretty much surf the boat down the swells on an angle to make it to your destination. You might end up a mile or two out of your way following that approach, but at least you'll end up in the lee of the island or mainland. Hitting them head-on or cruising with them can get you swamped in a hurry.
