I don't see an issue with saying no problem when holding a door open. I respond with that without even thinking about it

Sounds like he was having a bad day but if you tell that story to every table you have in the future they will feel bad and give you at least an extra 5% in tips when you average it out so use it to your advantage and congrats on the raise, just always tell the story like it JUST happened.

I got used to saying this all the time, then I stopped. I didn't know people got so pissed over two words. Some one thanks me for doing something, I would say it like they didn't need to thank me. it took little effort from me.

same here - in response to a "thank you" i would always mean it as "no need for a thanks, glad to help out" kind of response. ive since tried to cut it out completely, but catch myself occassionally.
