78k to Uncle Sam last year.

Wrong line of thinking. Lots of people will have large one-off escrow checks for mortgages.
The correct question is... Largest check you could write right now?

I don't care how much you made---that is criminal. The federal tax system is a complete disincentive to achievement. I am self employed and get hammered yearly. 16% off the top for Social Security before I ever pay the first dime in taxes. Meanwhile, the government spends money like water on frivolous crap that has zero redeeming value to the vast majority of Americans and enables and entitles those that choose not to work to continue to make that choice.
Obviously, I have "tax season rage" going on right about now.

Personally - 23,000 for my house down payment.
Professionally - I'm a banker it would make the OT blush.

40k to my ex-wife. This was far from the financial damage done to me by that divorce......it was simply the final blow. Bitter sweet writing out that check. Glad to be done with crazy woman and hurt like the dickens to hand her that much of my hard earned $

Yep, yep, yep, me too.
My personal number was higher but still only a minor percentage of the checks from the workplace.

I've written bigger checks but the 37K I sent her really hurt. She was trying to get the house finaced in her name and she had to replace the stucco, paint the shutters, and the frig died. My GF said "Karma was in Panama City for Spring Break" (where the ex lives)

I had a friend who wrote a similar check. On the memo line he wrote "for past services rendered"
