Or he was pissed off at GermanWings.
There was a crash in CA back in the 70s or early 80s involving a disgruntled employee. I think it was a now defunct airline called PSA, Pacific Southwest Airlines. A mechanic or ground crewman (not flight crew) had a meeting w/ a supervisor that didn't go well for him. The crewman used his employer ID to board the flight the supervisor was taking back to SF. He also brought a .357 in his carry-on, which wasn't x-rayed. After the flight takes off, he smokes the supervisor and then walks into the cockpit and shoots the pilots. The plane crashed around San Luis Obisbo, killing about 50, I think.

No, I know, nobody knows. Totally could be Columbine in the Air, if you will.

Why couldn't the pilot get back into the cockpit?

Or you could just tell me the answer, instead of sifting through hundreds of articles. I read the one linked most recently, and it didn't say.

Because the cockpit locks from the inside to keep people out...

The answer is complicated. Which is why he told you to look it up.

the msn article says that when asked about his religion, the investigators said that they didn't think that it was an important factor to look into right now.
considering the number of people worldwide trying to join ISIS, i'd say it's a pretty damned important factor. even if it's not really ISIS's MO to hijack airplanes.

I read there was a keypad combo to allow the pilot re-access. Did the co-pilot override that? If it can be overridden, what is its purpose?

I heard that there are different ways to lock the door and one way to lock it is so that absolutely no one can get in. The co-pilot set it that way so that the pilot could not get in, no matter what.

I read something earlier that seemed to make sense. With today's technology, couldn't a data signal be transmitted by ground controllers to lock & unlock the door?

Seems like a flaw in the system, however rare. I expect they will consider alternatives. Maybe require two persons to lock it that way.

I don't think the cockpit should ever be locked shut to be honest..
There will always be the possibility of a hijacking, if the cockpit is locked after being hijacked, the end result will more than likely always be a crash.
With access to the cockpit, 100+ passengers would be much more likely to be able to subdue the hijacker or even a small group of hijackers.
Add a third pilot, with identification, randomly placed onboard in plain clothes ready to take over after any incident.
Make it known he's on board somewhere as a deterrent. Hijackers can't take control without knowing who the 3rd pilot is.

I assume it can be overridden to prevent the scenario where a the person entering the code is being forced to enter it.

Fox News reporting that German authorities have deemed it pilot suicide. No link yet.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the terrorists taking control and then locking the door behind them.

But if the door is locked they cant get in in the first place, theoretically.

Yeah, I would think so. Makes sense... until something like this happens.
There may be no perfect system, but I expect they will look to tweak the current one.
