Need some help fellas... I'm heading down to orange beach 4/15-4/18, and would like to do some pier and surf fishing. I've been out on a charter before but never surf fished so any help will be appreciated

I think the best thing to do is go to the local tackle shop and get them to set you up. They'll know what is running and what to use. Been seeing reports of Cobia and a couple Blackfin coming off the piers. Not in Orange beach, but not far. Kings should probably be moving in by then, looks like they are starting to catch a few now.

I prefer wading over pier and surf fishing. Depending on the tide, Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores can have excellent wade fishing.

You know anything about fishing under the Perdido Pass bridge? I'm planning on taking a couple of rods with me..A stripper rod with an Abu Garcia 5600 and a crappie rig also...does that sound like a good idea ?

I see people fishing the piers on Ono Island all the time. Might inquire about that.

Google "bubble rig". It's basically a clear plastic cork that you fill with water. Trail a mono leader from it. You cut a short length of drinking straw and put the leader through it, then tie on a treble hook. You pop it along so it bubbles. I slaughtered the hardtails and spanish mackeral with it.

Flounder are thick in the surf from end of July to mid-October. I'm not sure about this time of year, but jig head tied directly to your line with soft plastic will do the trick. Used gulp shrimp and shad imitations with success. Just watch the tide and that will dictate when the flounder are there.
*ETA Mid-October, not mid-August

Tear It Up - where do you access Little Lagoon for wade fishing?

Not sure under the bridge but you can catch sheephead on the rock jetties out from the bridge.

Do not go to zekes marina. Its the same 4-5 guides that use the same spot over and over. We went to the same spot's two years in a row and caught nothing and used these shite "LY" Minnows for bait! when the guide pulled up and said lets go try another spot close by I said if your taking me to the pier by that condo over there or that bridge crossing the island take me in! He took me in! Exact same spots and then they try and fish the channel that connects the gulf or chase birds on the beack early in the morning. I looked at my buddy and said can you believe that we paid money to chase birds! that's all they got at zekes for inshore! worse than a joke!

I've caught flounder just west of the perdido pass jetties, biggest one I got was over 20"

Off of Perdido Beach Blvd. There is a bridge that goes over the Little Lagoon Pass. On the east side of the bridge there is a parking area and public restroom.

Go to Mo Bait and Tackle or Top Gun Tackle (both owned by the same person), get some shrimp and ask a few questions.
Pick up some squid and mullet also, if they dont have it at the tackle shop, walmart has it.
Cross the bridge and take an immediate right into the parking lot (Cobalt will be on the left). You can walk down and fish under the bridge and all the way down the jetty to the mouth of the gulf.
Fish anything on egg sinker and you can try shrimp on cork.
I have caught some huge blues under the bridge along with some small reds, hardheads, etc.
Wade fishing along the beach is good also. Same techniques stated before, I have caught huge rays, shark, flounder and a ton of other fish doing this.
2 years ago, one morning there were a shitload of reds running right along the shoreline towards the pass. Everyone started running up to their rooms to grab rods and shite, it was wild.
If you have a morning to spare, drive to the end of Fort Morgan Rd and fish behind the fort. Shrimp on egg sinker did it for me, it was killer. Let me know if you can do this and I will find my thread and link it with all of the info.

What did you catch back there?
Posted on 3/25/15 at 9:48 am to Larry Gooseman
A couple of big black drum, quite a few reds (no size) and a couple of specks.
Water was pretty rough when I went, so I didnt get the glass to run topwater on or anything. I just fished dead shrimp on an egg sinker, gulp shrimp (new penny) got a few also.
There are some good fish back there, Dixie Bar is a few hundred yards off the shoreline and apparently that is where the bulls roam.

Have they finished rebuilding the bridge and widening Little Lagoon Pass?
