Get a FANTASTIC a supporting cast (Team). Once you do that you can delegate more which allows you to disengage easier.

Decide on what time you start and what time you want to end. While in that time, give it all you have. Once you reach your timeline, put any communication device related to work away.

I personally carry two phones for this reason, one for business and the other for personal.

Have a kid. I just had one a month ago and priorities have changed. Have no problem putting down laptop at 5pm to enjoy time with my daughter.

For about 10 years, I had a job that demanded my attention almost 24/7. I was never really off or on vacation. I have since changed careers, where now I have no need to take the job home. I make less money; a lot less, but I can't even explain how nice it is to be away from the stress.

I have a work phone/laptop and a play phone/laptop.

As soon as quitting time hits, every work thing goes off.

Find some good hobbies.

I have trouble disconnecting too, but I just make sure to find good things to do. Run, hike, play soccer, cook, play board games.... I easily disconnect then.

I track certain activities and when i hit my mark i go home. Focus on profitable action, knock down a daily goal then go home.

In sales. Generous base, triple digits, plus bonus structure as a percentage of increased margin versus previous year. I never totally disconnect. Today's business climate is 24/7. In fact, I have some customers who only call/text/email me with orders, on Sat/Sun mornings. Its the time they set aside in their offices to plan their week. Part of the territory.

I'm in the same boat. I actually got a call at 9 with an hour long conversation on Sunday last night telling me to be at dow for 7 this morning.

I feel your pain, but with a job like this I like for my customers to rely on me. As the post above says the money is great and even though technically I can be working at any time or day I also have a lot of flexibility and more off time than most that work full time jobs.

It's a trade off, but sometimes it can be draining.

"Old folks" didn't live in the same world we do, where responses to emails are required on nights, weekends, etc. As well as crazy arse deadlines thanks to faster technology.

A few things that can help:

- Meditate daily to remove things from your head at least for a time. There are several good books. Dan Harris' 10% Happier has great reviews

- Exercise / take walks, leaving the phone at home.

- Plan weekend or longer trips to favorite places or somewhere new. It's something to look forward to.

- Volunteer in your hood, through church or otherwise. It aligns perspective.

- In the blink of a cosmic eye, we'll be dead and in the ground. Don't sweat the small stuff.

The disconnect isn't just a sales job issue, it's an American manufactured issue. Most other countries, especially in Europe, are able to turn it off and go home without being attached to their job. You ought to see them on vacation. They leave for weeks without a care in the world because the system is set up so that someone else is actually doing your work while you're gone!

I'm in sales and have a family of six kids at home.
My strategy is this. Almost everyday when I walk in the door, my phone goes on silent. I kiss the babies and then take 10 minutes to do nothing. After that I play with my kids and do chores/ projects around the house. All the while, my phone is on silent and stays that way until after dinner when I sit down with a beverage of choice. I'll check it out make sure there are no fires then put the phone in the mud room.
I've almost never missed something I shouldn't have.
2 important points
First I provide in my emails sig and voicemail an emergency number to call and secondly (most importantly) this is not an absolute! Balance is the key

37 year sales veteran here...

It's not easy to disconnect. My best solution was to adopt the attitude of " I work to live, not live to work".
Make sure you develop some hobbies and interests outside of work. And it helps to have a supportive family as well.
Good luck....nothing happens until a sale is made

People in sales

Good luck. Was in sales for 10 years. Grew to hate it, the constant "what have you done for me lately" attitude of the employee and the buyers made me want to kick my dog(s). Finally got out, and will never (Hay-zeus willing) ever get back in sales. I HATE sales with every fiber of my being.

I'm not in sales, but I have to be available 24/7. I used to go on 1-2 week long benders out of the country to disconnect. Now I have a kid and have to be responsible, so I just don't look at my phone after hours unless it's an emergency.

The age old struggle. Quota on your mind all year. Company only meets about money. Product never looked at in regards to the actual service and good it provides...only how much we can make on it...who we can sell it to whether it's a viable solution or not. It can make you fricking miserable.
