re: What's the most condescending advice people usually give

I hate the "everything happens for a reason" thought process...
I hate when people talk about Karma...
I don't believe either of these things are helpful...
Sure there is a reason something bad happened to you but it doesn't mean any good will every come of it.
Karma doesn't work...bad people get away with stuff all the time and good people get screwed...that is just life.
I treat religion as a means to becoming a better person...praying offers self reflection to help with that...

Not getting into the God and prayers argument, even though I'm a believer.
The most condescending and meaningless piece of advice I hear commonly thrown out, regardless of situation is "Everything happens for a reason."
I hear this all the time and I think that it is just a means for the speaker to fill time in a conversation because they don't know what to say as opposed to actual advice meant to help someone. Beyond that, it's just so meaningless and empty.
Everyone, do the world a favor and dump this phrase from your inventory.

The one that is driving me crazy, most recently, is the "if my so and so can do it, then you can do it"...putting down one person and saying they are such morons that if they can accomplish such and such, then surely you can too...

quote:Very good answer to op "question".
"Everything works out for the best."
quote:Best possible answer for problems in life, if you are praying to the true living God. Most of you think you know what that statement means, but few, if any, of you have a real clue what it means. Unfortunately, most people don't want the answers that He gives. They usually involve sacrifice, and nobody likes sacrifice. The things you love the most are probably also destroying you.
you should really pray about it"

Prayer generally puts one in a more relaxed and focused state of mind that really helps for seeing an issue with greater clarity. I have had many "eureka" moments while praying when i suddenly got the answer i needed, not necessarily from divine intervention, but rather because prayer forces one to clear their mind of any and all distractions and focus.

This may come as a shock to you, but some people do believe prayer works. Likewise some find solace in prayer. You apparently do not. Fair enough. It's not your thing, fine. But why be angry when someone else suggests it to you? Did you not solicit their opinion and advice? If you're going to be a big pussy about the tragedy that is your life, then quit inviting people into it. Then you won't be offended by the answers you seek.

This exactly. It brings you a kind of peace to know that God is there. And it really helps calm you and put things into perspective so that you can make a better decision. IME

Worst advice is to consider the pros and cons
You don't think I haven't already done that? Idiots

I certainly believe in Karma as it pertains to this life and not a next one.
Karma is self-perpetuated. If you say right/do right by others - you are more likely to get the same in return. Doesn't make you bulletproof... but it does keep more positive things happening.

When someone tells you to pray about a problem what they are really doing is just telling you to go clear your mind.
They aren't really offering any answers.

Sounds like meditative thought to me. But I accept this answer over most others like it. And you were civil. which is nice

Its not a shoot up an elementary school type of unhinged anger. Its simply irritating. Normally when i approach someone for suggestions they are usually intimately aware of your circumstances and/or have experiences or understanding of that type problem. I wouldnt just ask a homeless person about a life issue. So when the person I ask tells me to go get on my knees and have a long think about it, that's a lazy arse answer

Well since we're being honest, youre wrong as shite. Yeah last week i was asking someone a question about a complicated legal dilemma I'm dealing with. My brain was taxed and I asked a friend. She told me I should really ask god what I should do about it. an argument ensued
If you are asking someone for their opinion, you need to be ready to receive it, say thank you and move on.

These types of threads are always interesting.
Reading them with a non-prejudicial eye, it is hard not to come away without a poor impression of those that don't believe.
They always sound so bitter and antagonistic. They lack the grace to tolerate those that believe in God, yet they are the ones that say all believers are intolerant.

I see it more as a mental impasse than intolerance.
FWIW - I am generally not the prayer type... but I am the type to spend alone time thinking on things. If somebody can get past the impasse - They may think on the other person's advice differently.

If thats what youre reading then youre definitely not being non prejudicial
I havent degraded prayer for what it is, a form of meditation or reflection. But if youre looking for a practical solution to a problem you have already spent a good deal of time considering, its not going to produce a solution. I'm not here saying what is or isnt real, im not that arrogant. But if youre seeking counsel for practical advice, telling someone to go meditate is insulting. Just say you wish you could help, as someone suggested

Chef, to be brutally honest, your life sounds pretty messed up or at least your past life.
I can't imagine that being a little more openable-minded could hurt you.

You agreed with me last night that reflection in a quiet place (for you the dock behind your house) provided an opportunity for a clear mind and can help decision making.
What a shitty troll you are.
