Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). Most of your better 7th graders are going to end up doing it (in the BR area at least). And 16 is on the lower end of what most of them score. Saw quite a few in low 20s.

Yea, it's set up by Duke for kids who score near the top in the standardized tests kids take in 6th grade.
I got a 25 in seventh grade when I did it, haven't read through this thread but since this is the OT I'm guessing that makes me slightly below average.

25 is a pretty solid score. Especially if you only took the ACT once. I would like to see some stats on score improvement after first, second, and third attempts.

I got a 26 the one time I took it...and I was still drunk from the night before, probably slept about 3 hours and smoked a joint that morning on the way to the facility.

High school was an interesting time for me.

What was the scale for the TIP test? I can't remember my score to save my life. I remember it was high enough to get invited to all of the extra programs offered to the top tier kids.

ACT, SAT, GRE are some of the worst IQ indicators

Its an efficiency exam.

Anecdotal evidence, but all of my intelligent friends did well on the test, while others who had better GPA's (but we all knew were inflated due to taking easier classes, actually studying, etc...) scored lower.

Sucks for many that the extra credit they earned for attending pep-rallys and donating can goods doesn't get accounted for in their ACT scores.

It's a regular ACT score, Duke just arranges for you to take it. If you are asking about the test that they used to identify the kids to participate in the program, I have no idea.

Late to the game but I work in higher ed administration.

The number of 4.0 GPAs and sub 18 ACT scores would shock most of you. Its not the ACT - its grade inflation in the high schools. C students are being given As because they bring in canned food or attend sporting events.

The ACT/SAT is a great indicator of true intelligence. I'd take my chances on a 2.0 GPA and a 28 ACT over a 4.0 GPA and an 18.

Oh, and C students run the world.

Night before mine I went to a graduation party for another school and left the party to go take ACT drunk as hell.

Got a 26.

I remember the Duke invite.

Even in 7th grade I had better things to do than take that test.

The girl who finished third in my high school class made a 14 on her ACT, never finished community college, and is on her third marriage. Complete loser.

I did only take it once - I think at the time 25 was what was required to get into Auburn so I didn't put myself through it again. Standardized tests make me anxious

I remember thinking after the offer, there's shite on this exam I've never been exposed to, what's the point?

I think if I had a Tiger mom or something I could have handled the Trig and whatever at that age, but I didn't and I wasn't about to just take questions and randomly guess at them.

summer programs

Not only through Duke. Many universities offer summer academic programs to these kids 1-3 weeks in length, costing $2-4k.

My son, now in 10th grade, made a 19 on the ACT as a 7th grader, and we recieve many solicitations in the mail for these programs.

It looks like good education, but it is pricey, in my opinion.
