I've stayed in the same hotel in the French quarter and had totally different experiences. Some of those older places have a few nice rooms and a bunch of crap rooms. I stayed at the St. Louis for the 07 national championship and it was pretty nice for the price and location. A few years later found a deal for $35 a night and figured, that's an amazing price, and I was familiar with the hotel, so I spent the weekend there with my girlfriend. Horrible mistake. The room was like a crack den. No hot water, couldn't open the door all the way because the bed was to big for the room
. I mean just awful.

The Andrew Jackson on Royal St is p good for the money. No pool or other amenities though.

The Frenchmen Boutique Hotel on Frenchmen Street off Esplanade between French Quarter and Bywater. Great night life without going into the French Quarter.

Try Priceline. You can usually get something at the Crowne Plaza or Marriott cheap.

Prince Conti - it's where all the strippers stay when in town performing at the clubs. One block off Bourbon

Try just across Canal like the St Christopher or the Pelham. Even the Doubletree.
All are decent.

I use Priceline a lot and always get a really good deal cheap. The website betterbidding.com shows all the details from Priceline too.
