Nope. Not risking 20 years in prison

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I browsed through a few pages. I would be willing to bet that the yeses can be categorized generally as young and that those who said 'no, they wouldn't risk it,' can be categorized as older. I'm not sure what the over/under cut off is. Maybe it's 35, maybe it's 40--but I'd be willing to bet it's less than 50.
Am I right posters above?

I said I'd do it. Married with two kids.

Holy cow for some reason I didn't see that last part. Under. Early 30s

Exhibit A in support of my theory.

quote:Well if you were basing it on the expected value of the wins - expected value of losses, the we would expect a negative relationship between age and willingness to participate. I would argue that, mathematically, unless it is nearly impossible to make a half court shot, that the vast majority of the time, the value of expected pay-out would exceed the losses.

What a retarded question.

lol at anybody who thinks they only need 10 shots
Posted on 3/11/15 at 10:05 pm to Ryan3232
Need some clarification. Do they mean some country club? Or are they talking PMITA prison?

i'm shooting, i know i'd make 1 out of fricking 20
Posted on 3/11/15 at 10:18 pm to tress4pres
But seriously, anyone with any kind of bball skill should be able to make 1 out of 20. Hell I could make at least 1 backwards. Really not that hard. The only thing is that the pressure build up would be unreal if you continue to miss.

If I had a few weeks to train, I would consider it.
Roommate and I are talking about this. Came up with a scenario if you win the 20 million. You get another 20 shots
You make 1 - 100 million
You dont - lose the 20 million and go to jail for 4 years.
I said hell no

Even if you shot 0.1% (1 in 1000) from half court, the probability that you would make at least 1 is about 2% (1.98% to be more precise). So the expected value of the prize, even being such a poor shooter, is $396,222. Obviously going to jail would incur various financial, emotional, and social losses, but it would be hard to pass up.
I don't think you truly grasp how bad I am at basketball.

I'm with you. I wouldn't take the opportunity if it was from the 3 pt line let alone half court.

I used to play half court knock out with the 6th grade team I coached. You would be surprised how many we made, and one kid made 5 in a row. Once you get in a rhythm and muscle memory kicks in, it's just like shooting a FT.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. I trust my ability to hit one out of 5.
Im assuming you have realized this is ridiculous by now

Yes. Likelihood of hitting 1 out of 20 is probably around 50%-- assuming you are athletic and have played the sport.
I would think that is pretty accurate
