Problems is ALL of our LBs are good run stopper that can't cover worth a damn. We need to get rid of all but two of them(Haralson and Humber would be my keepers; cheap and capable).
Agree 100%. Humber makes peanuts compared to Lofton and Hawthorne and is a very similar player.

He was a career backup who we hoped could be a starter. There was never a guarantee there.
Ingram did kill him though.

Not to say he isn't the problem or at least part of it, but I think we may have only drafted one LB in the 3rd round and none in the first two since he's been here.
I am not saying the guy was given a treasure trove of talent at the position, but he also hasn't even had average linebacker play while here. I have yet to see many LBers develop at all under him.
If they aren't willing to get talent at the position, then they better as hell get someone who can coach like a madman at the position.
Kromer had how many players outside of the top 2 rounds that he developed into pro-bowlers at the OL position? Yet, till this day, Vitt has yet to develop one pro-bowl linebacker. The only one he had was Vilma, and Vilma was a pro-bowler in NY before coming here.

Completely agree(except for the SB year where the LBs played well). I just wanted to point out that we haven't done well addressing the talent issue.
Hell we haven't drafted a first round LB since 1995. It needs to be done.

We've drafted one OL player in the top 2 rounds in 2006 (Charles Brown in 2nd) and seemed to be okay most of the time at that position. That is the saddest part about LBer.

If the problem is our development why are these guys not doing anything once they leave the Saints? Nincovich is the only one who's panned out and we cut him cause he couldn't stay healthy.

There is an optimal time for developing a player once they are in the league. After that, their ability to improve isn't as good. Also as a person who has coached, you often have to actually uncoach horrible things bad coaches taught players before you can coach them up appropriately. It's harder most of the time then people realize and isn't simply a "put him on team X with a great developer and he'll be awesome".

So players NFL don't improve in their mid 20's. Ok
Get on Vitt for shitty drafting in the mid rounds and you're on to something.

Did I say that? No. I said optimal time for development. I also mentioned that poor coaching is often hard to counteract.

Shitty coaching + shitty drafting is what gets you the Saints LBer struggles. He has a built in excuse with some of you. It is amazing.

Not with me.
I've been on the fire Vitt bandwagon for years.
Lofton is overpaid.
He probably played the worst last year among our LB's, but he also did the most.
Hopefully, they have someone to replace him in mind.

Nope I want Vitt gone too but we also cannot ignore that we've been ignoring the position.
That said he is Payton's boy and isn't going anywhere. Same with McMahon sadly.

I don't think Lofton is all that bad. But he's pretty one dimensional.
we need at least one LB out there who can make a difference in coverage. I don't think Hawthorne is that guy. I mean what has he done since he got here? He got the interception vs. Green Bay on a deflection.. ok great.
but he also had a chance to make a huge play vs. the Ravens and dropped a potential pick six.
is he a good blitzer? I don't know if Lofton is either.
So they make a handful of tackles each game... great. But neither really does much besides that.

I could see us signing a guy like Spikes who is younger and cheaper and do the same things Lofton can do.
Then we most draft Kendricks or a MLB in the 2nd

With all those moves, I am all in for Shaq Thompson at 13th spot and hopefully we can either scoop up David Cobb from Minnesota in the later rounds.
Posted on 3/4/15 at 4:27 pm to Beer Genius
if we picked Shaq Thompson at #13 i'd do to my TV what that Seattle fan did to his after the Super Bowl.
I like Eric Kendricks though. He could be there in the 2nd round

If anyone wants Shaq Thompson in the first round they should go be a part of the Browns front office
Posted on 3/4/15 at 4:29 pm to LooseCannon22282
Dude, Shaq Thompson is a beast. He can cover, he can tackle. He's versatile. Definitely a Rex Ryan guy.
