Pulling a pitcher in middle of a no-hitter at 6 1/3

What's the usual protocol for this?

I would think you let him keep going until there is a hit, right?

Tim Yandel of Tulane pulled this off in his first start ever. David Pierce pulled him in the sixth Sunday against Pepperdine.

What the issue was that it was his longest outting ever after 3 innings a year ago against Rice.

Well I would think this guy has been in a position to have thrown a no-hitter in HS. So I say keep him in and see what happens... I don't see where it hurts him even if he gives up a few hits or even a few runs... Gotta grow sometime.........

Depends on the pitcher, amount of pitches, type of situations, I mean we've had several 4+ pitcher no-hitters in MLB.

Hard to say without more details. Is pitcher prone to injury, on a strict pitch count, etc...

No reason to beat up your pitcher.

Coaches get beat up for leaving guys in too long. Now you want to get on him for pulling a guy after 6 1/3?

It's a team sport. Coach is trying to win and keep his pitcher fresh long term. I support this decision under tge circumstances you described considering his longest previous outing.

No-hitters are cool but Tommy John isn't.

Early in the season your pitch count is strict. Once you hit that number, you're pretty much done

He was pulled because it was his longest outing of his career at that point. He is a converted position player who has never been stretch that far. He also took a no hitter into the 7th last weekend before giving up a single.

As a former college pitcher I can tell you that the best solution here is for a pitcher to tell his manager the truth.

I've never been in a no hitter situation but I've had the manager ask me how my arm feels. If I said "Fine" he let me go another inning. If I said "Elbow is starting to feel a little numb" he'd pull me out. He can't feel your arm. You need to tell the truth.

Did he pull him in the 6th or 7th?

No hitter =/= pitching a good game. In 6.1 innings a pitcher can throw a lot of pitches, not have great control, etc, and be the beneficiary of great defense, etc.

Not all "no hitters" are created equal.

Pulled him with 1 out in the 7th inning of the Pepperdine series after a walk. Had allowed no hits at that point.

Pulled him in the 7th of the San Francisco series after allowing his first hit.

Too early in the year to be stretching out pitchers when you don't need to. You'll need them a lot more down the road when every game counts

Way too early in the season.

They are all on pitch count probably somewhere In the 75-85 range regardless of situation

Most pitchers are on a pitch count at this point in the year.

It's the right thing to do...especially if he's only in the 7th and obviously isn't going to finish it off.

Ya I have seen a ton of pitchers throw no-hitters that have been pitching horribly. Totally.
