re: Two Tennessee Girls Basketball Teams Try to Lose

So what about the free throw example? Do you ALWAYS TRY TO MAKE YOUR FREE THROWS, or do you situationally adjust when there is 1 second on the clock and you are down by 2, so you know that making it will only cause you to lose the game with certainty? Ever hear of losing a battle but winning a war?
Strategically missing a shot to put yourself in a position to win is the same as strategically missing all your shots so you lose? Is this what you're saying?
quote:
Perhaps, but there are other scenarios. (And really, who cares what you LOOK like? Is that the lesson you want for your kids...that it's a style contest?).
So in your real world, how others perceive you is not important? I think a recruiter would be interested to know that a potential recruit chose this loser's strategy because they didn't think they could beat another team. I assume your opinion is a team should be loaded with people like this.
quote:
Someone else mentioned the scenario whereby a different team manages to pull the upset on Blackman, thus leaving a potentially substantially weaker opponent in the final.
And the attitude that your team absolutely could not be that team shows a loser's attitude, and low character.
quote:
Ignorance of what?
For you, mostly everything apparently. For these girls, the bigger picture.
quote:
The world sure seems very black and white to you. Good to know you have it figured out...and on the side that is DEFINITELY RIGHT...right?
This situation is black and white, and the side that I am on in this case is DEFINITELY the right one.
But hey, maybe you should ask the coaches who will probably be fired, or the schools who are out $1,500, or the girls who won't even get the chance to lose to that better team. They live in the real world, where their actions had terrible consequences, based a lot on the perception they created for themselves and their school. Perhaps they would accept an invite to your real world where a shitty attitude yields you at best second place.

looks me as thought they were both scared to face team Blackman
As a girls basketball team, do you blame them?
Seriously. If they would have had to face Asianwoman do you think this'd be happening?

Says the NBA and NFL.
That's a little different.
If you are in playoff contention, intentionally losing in the NBA and NFL will not help your postseason seeding.
The NBA and NFL are businesses that are trying to generate as much revenue as possible. It the super bowl winners get the first pick in next years draft the NFL business model starts to fail.
I don't like it but I don't really see a way around it.

Because you're taking the sportsanship out of the game by intentionally losing, especially trying to score for the other team.
While I admit playing to lose was a good idea due to the bracketing, it's also teaching the kids that taking the easy way out of a jam is ok if it's convenient. You'll never advance in life if you continually dodge adversity.
I also think suspending the teams was the right thing to do to set an example and discourage that kind of play for the rest of the tournament. When the season ends, rework the bracket to keep that from happening.
I think the article summed it up perfectly with the first few lines:

If only the Smyrna and Riverdale girls had Herm Edwards as their coach. He surely would have pointed out to them that “you play to win the game.”

From the comments:
I kind of like the idea of playing the game like that.
quote:
The teams responded rationally, and competitively, to the rules that were given to them. The referee called halt when the players started scoring for their opponents, but that's just when the game was getting interesting. It could have become a hard-fought game if he had let each team try to score in the other team's basket. The first string would have come back in for each team and the girls would have tried to play their best, just going for the opposite basket. It was probably getting too confusing for the ref.
I kind of like the idea of playing the game like that.

As someone who has seen hundreds of girls basketball games (my daughters play) I can tell you that playing basketball the correct way is already confusing for the refs.

And the league took the point of winning out of the game. You shouldn't be penalized for showing good sportsmanship and winning a game, right?

This isn't a question of adversity. Jeez. Just quit it with that argument. It's about strategy and risk.
quote:
Sure they can be upset by another team but I'd rather keep my dignity and try to beat the powerhouse early than intentionally lose.
Then you would make a terrible coach. You want your team to be tested the most their first game of a playoff? What if you are a top seed? You want to play the best team first? Do you realize how stupid that is? What if that team is known to play rough? What if you beat them but several of your starters get hurt and are out the rest of the tournament because they played a lot harder than they would have against a lower seed?
quote:
I also think suspending the teams was the right thing to do to set an example and discourage that kind of play for the rest of the tournament. When the season ends, rework the bracket to keep that from happening.
The correct answer is to suspend the coaches and rethink the way they form the brackets so that this CAN'T happen. Like I said, why should a team be penalized for winning?

Agreed, and why does the loser of consolation game get to advance much less be rewarded?

I'm saying that it's clearly a spectrum and not an actual principle (as I assume you would happily miss the FT).

My opinion is I play my game however I see fit and then let the results speak for themselves.

No, it shows realism.

For you, mostly everything apparently. For these girls, the bigger picture.
The bigger picture is getting into the easier side of the bracket and finishing higher.

Nah. U just mad because not everyone sees it like you do.

Pussification of America. I'm highly aware of it.

So your saying the loser of this game would have no chance to win the title?

The way around it is for all of these supposed professionals to have the same rock-hard, unquestionable characters as some of the self-appointed heroes in this thread and PLAY HARD AND TO WIN ON EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

If the coach would have been smart, he would have just had all his players get thrown out of the game and be forced to forfeit.
