Another 1911 Thread

I'm looking at buying my first 1911 and need some advice. This would be for a carry gun. Other than name and price is there are noticeable different in the SR1911 (4.5 in.) and the Kimber Super Carry Pro (or Kimber in general)? I wouldn't mind spending the extra money if the functionality of the Kimber is really that much better, but I'm not the kind to spend $700 extra for a name and a gun that may look better, but functions just the same. It also seems everyone on the OB has a SR1911, so what say the OB?

If you want one for carry get the master carry pro

Sr1911 or Dan Wesson Eco.

First you need to know the "sizes" of the 1911:
1. Government size = 5" with a full sized frame
2. Commander size = 4-4.5" with a full sized frame
3. Commander Hybrid = 4-4.5" with compact frame
4. Officer size = 3-3.5" with a compact frame
Kimber's "Pro" series is their commander size and their "ultra" is their officer size.
Know that when carrying a 1911, you should always practice in deactivating the safety every single time. It's a good weapon but there is a process that must be followed.
Kimber and Ruger are both great brands. I'm sure you'll have luck with either one.

I know I want a commander size. I'm not big on the laser's, which is why i prefer the super carry over the master carry in the Kimber's. I just didn't know if all the extra money spend on a Kimber is for the name on the side. I know Ruger is a good brand in general and obviously Kimber must be doing something right, but if each gun was unmarked and you couldn't tell a difference pulling the trigger, I'd rather save $700. If it's worth it, I have no problem spending it.

Of those two I would get the kimber. The super carry has an aluminum frame and bobbed frame. No brainer for me, but I'm a sucker for bob tails.

SR1911. Unless you're entering a popularity contest, the Ruger is a dependable firearm that performs as well as any I've shot. I've got the Ruger and a Kimber. When I leave the house the Ruger is with me.

just get a glock. Will always go bang... 100x better than a 1911 and cheaper

I have a Kimber SCP and carry it almost daily. Great shooting gun right out of the box. If you get the Kimber, I would recommend getting higher quality magazines for it. Either Wilson or McCormick. The only issue I have had with the Kimber was a FTF malfunction and it was related to the mag that came with the gun. ( You only get 1 btw.) I switched to McCormick mags and haven't had an issue since. The Kimber also doesn't have a traditional barrel bushing and breakdown for cleaning can be a chore. The mainspring retaining tool that comes with the gun isn't anything special. I made several out of large paperclips. I highly recommend the Kimber. Shop around tho. I got mine from a local gun shop for $100 less that a very large chain sporting goods store.

Colt Lightweight Commander.

For carry try the Colt Defender, Springfield EMP, Kimber Ultra, etc. Be careful of the idiot scratch though. That's why your first 1911 should be a cheap one.

The Super Carry is Boss. I love mine. Shoots like a dream. Beautiful and functional. Dehorned and smooth as a baby's behind. Deep dark finish is exceptional too.
It is my favorite handgun. I prefer it over my HK and Colts for most situations.

I prefer Wilson and I changed out the recoil spring with an $8 Wolff’s Improved XP Recoil Spring.

So does the new Ruger SR1911 Lightweight Commander.

It doesn't have a bob tail though

The Ruger LW also has a titanium feedramp to prevent it wearing too much over time. I think it's a nice touch.
If you want a nice bobtailed 1911, also give the SW1911 Scandium a look:

Very solid choice. Most of Springfield's offerings are very high value.
